I noticed the same thing. I questioned whether it had something to do with the comment spam problems. Onethumb is fighting back by sending out huge amounts of garbage to the spammer. I'm guessing that this could cause some problems for smugmug's server??? Just my speculation though. It is fine by me if it means we are winning the war against the evil spammer.

I'm not able to get to my site:
Events.FredDickinson.com
or by going directly through my Smugmug.com link.
Is this a regional thing as I'm not able to link to MikeLane's site above either currently.
Anybody else?

I'm glad the note is coming up now. That way if clients visit at least they know it is a problem with the site.
Hopefully it will be back up soon. :wink

Could it be from a spam overload? Maybe there was too much stress on the servers because of our recent spammer...

Wish these were glitches - but they're not.
smugmug was/is the target of a large-scale Denial-of-Service attack.
I currently have it under control, but I have my doubts as to whether that will last too long.
Andrew and I are going to make some emergency network upgrades during the day today which should help. Unfortunately, these sorts of things are nearly impossible to combat - our upgrades will only help us get a little more insight into what's going on, but won't significantly help our ability to stop them.
The reason stopping them is so difficult, by the way, is the way DoS attacks occur these days. Rather than a single machine attacking us, it's usually thousands and thousands of them spread across the globe. Who has thousands of machine, you may ask? It turns out that people have made a game and a business out of taking over Windows boxes with security holes and then utilizing them to take out websites like ours.
We'll do our best, and we appreciate your patience.

I don't *think* so, but it's impossible to be sure.
The spammer is still trying to spam right this second (and not succeeding), so I don't think he even knows that he's not able to post. Likely he just hit "GO" on his script and walked away.
I think this is something else entirely. It's possible we're the topic of discussion on some hax0r message forum which is where both spammers got us from as well as the DoS guy.
We'll see, though.

my local newspaper had a fascinating article about one such hacker in their sunday magazine this past weekend - he's one of the folks who makes his living off creating and using the "botnets" responsible for such Denial of Service attacks: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/14/AR2006021401342.html

Ok, in the middle of updating my site, it froze up, went away whatever. So my benchmark is to hit Andy's site. Well his is borked www.moonriverphotography.com (http://www.moonriverphotography.com)
Still having problems??
EDIT: Ok I just went back to Andy's site and it is now ok. He had no menu displaying, his menu items were listed as a list down the left side of the page and his galleryies/categories were showing on his homepage.
I swear I saw it I really really saw it :lol

Things seem ok on my end. I've been uploading since about 8:30am. In five hours got just over 250 photos up, which is about 50 per hour. This is typical for my uploads.
Even cable modem feels slow any more... :(

Whats going on, I'm going to my site, it's down. Try Andy's site it's down. Bot sites timeout and unable to load. At the same time I'm on here (dgrin) try each of them again. Same thing. Then, they come up.
I don't think it's me, because I'm able to see dgrin, as well as about 5 other sites at the same time via tabs in FF, I refresh them. There all there, except smugmug.
Any ideas?

:dunno John - I call it like I see it. I'm sorry you had trouble - I'll sure try and find out if there's any problem... Remember, sometimes indeed there are internet pipe issues that are local in nature. And you, as well as the richtersl are in (generally) the same geography.

John, I can hit your site just fine. What's up?
you don't have a cordless phone do you? (or a neighbor?)
I have a laptop at home with a wireless card. Occasionally i'll be cruising along when suddenly, the internet stops responding... I say, OMG smugmug is down. I try re-starting the browser... nope, reboot... no help, go to my desktop... hmmm, that is working :huh etc....
took me a while to figure out that my wife on the phone interfered with my wireless card. :wxwax She wouldn't have any problem, but my surfing would come to an abrupt halt. I think the phone is 2.5ghz freq, and so is my card. (or something like that..)
i was unable to connect today too at the same time that everyone else was unable. something screwy went on, whether it was SM or a routing issue out here.
