Going WIDE

To go with my D70, I already have the following glass

Nikon 80-200/2.8D AF-S
Nikon 50/1.8
Nikon 18-70mm

I am looking to go superwide or even fisheye

I am considering the following:

Tamron 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 XR DI II LD Aspherical (IF) AF Zoom
Sigma 10mm - 20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM
Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 ED-IF DX Autofocus Fisheye

Can anyone elaborate a little on this. My original thought is to go with the 10.5 Nikon, but in reality I am just startig the process of selection/elimination.

The 10.5 is a different beast than the two zooms - fisheyes tend to be specialty lenses.

I've heard that the Sigma is soft a pretty much any aperture... I've heard awesome stuff about the tokina 12-24 (have a few sample shots from a camera store demo on another system... I'll try to remember to post some tomorrow.)

Also, for 3x more than the tokina, you can't beat the 12-24mm f/4 nikkor.

As for the tamron... haven't seen much about it. I'd check pbase for samples.

I'd agree that the 10.5 is a different type of lens. You either go with the fish-eye distortion and work that into the artistry of your shot or you defish the result with software after shooting and when you clip the result to get it back to a rectangle, you end up with substantially less than 10.5mm.

I've been comparing the Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24 and Nikon 12-24 myself. I'm about to pull the trigger and get the Sigma 10-20. Here are some threads that discuss those lenses:

I knew that the 10.5 was a different animal, the similarity was in my budget.

I am very tempted to get the 10.5 now, and the 12-24 Nikon later.

My Canon mount sigma 10-20 is my favorite lens and very very sharp.

its very well-known that nikon makes fantastic wides... so given the choice of them i would go with the Nikon 12-24:thumb
