Hey I am leaving for Maui on Saturday to do some whale pictures, I have the 70-200 with the 1.4x TC but I was wondering about renting a 300 IS L 2.8. Too expensive to rent here in Seattle for a full 8 days, does anyone know of a gear rental place in Maui?

While the 300 2.8 is unquestionably one of the sharpest teles from Canon, you might be better off getting a longer, slower, cheaper lens. I'm thinking either the 400 F5.6, or the 100-400L. The 400 is sharper. However, the 100-400 is very versatile, and will allow you to get some broader shots of scenery or pods of multiple whales that wouldn't be possible with just the 400. Plus, the 100-400 has IS which is a big help on a boat. Either way, you will find the extra reach will be a plus.
You should just buy one of these instead of renting. You could turn it around after the trip, and you'll probably lose less money than the rental would have cost. That's if you decided to sell it. :evil

You may also want to consider that the 300 f/2.8 weighs 6 pounds. That could get pretty tiresome to carry around on a vacation. How about renting the 400 f/4 DO, it's about 1.4 pounds lighter and it's a sweet lens.
