View Full Version : Customization error, IE only

I noticed a few problems tonight after the new feature release. When viewing my photos with comments, some of the comments are not lining up as usual. This happens in IE6 but not firefox. It doesn't happen with every picture, and it gives mixed results on the photos that it does affect. Some of the comments won't wrap around to a second line. They just keep going and going in one line and make a really wide page. Other pages will be displayed with everything but the header pushed all the way to the left of the screen. I cleared my cookies and cache just incase it was interfering with the new features. No luck. Here is a screenshot from IE6
http://boyersmile.smugmug.com/photos/56488710-M.jpg

Notice everything pushed over to the left side and the one comment that stretches all the way across the screen. Not all of the pages are messed up. Some of them are perfect. If you go to my photo of the day gallery (http://boyersmile.smugmug.com/gallery/355422/1/56379709/Medium#comment) and flip through the photos with comments, you'll see a mix of various problems like the screenshot above.

Everything looks fine in Firefox.

I didn't notice this earlier today, so I'm guessing that it has something to do with the new features. Can anyone think of something in my customization that would cause something like this.

Thanks,
Miles

Hi Miles,

I'm sure this is easily fixable - stay tuned for one of the helpers, I'm sure you'll get sorted!

Thanks Andy for all your help. I'm always amazed at how quick you are to respond. You certainly devote a lot of time and energy to help others.

I originally posted this in the Support/release notes thread because it seemed to be related to the new features, but I'm sure it will receive equal attention here.

I'm certain I didn't have this problem earlier today because I received and checked several comments throughout the day. I even removed a few bits of CSS that I added yesterday and today, but I still get the same result.

Any further help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Miles

It's my pleasure, Miles - I spend about 20mins trying to figure it out - I'm sure that Mike or Lee or Devbobo or JT could do it in 90seconds :D

I'm pretty sure you have an unclosed tag somewhere. Make sure you've closed all your div tags and such.

I've done a quick check and can't find any unclosed tags, but I will look some more. I did notice that someone else with a basic smugmug account has the same issue on at least one of their commented photos.

When viewed through IE6, this page (http://ricardo38.smugmug.com/gallery/1187798/1/55772037/Large#comment) shows the same problems as some of my pages with comments. The comment stretches across the page rather than wrapping to a second line. Because of this, it also causes the page to shift over to the left. You can look at the picture before this one or after it to see how the page is supposed to line up. Like I said, this is a basic account so he hasn't done any customizing. I don't even see any extra HTML anywhere on his site.

I'm looking for other sites with photo comments in order to see if there might be others affected. I'm sure with my hodge podge of customizing, there is a pretty good chance that I've made some stupid mistakes, but I'm positive that I didn't have this problem until last night.

Thanks,
Miles

OHHHH. Now I'm really excited.:clap I just found the same error on Andy's site. Surely Andy wouldn't make the same silly mistake that I would.:D

Make sure you look at this in IE6. It looks fine in Firefox.

OK, I'll officially stop looking for mistakes now. I have work to do.

Thanks,
Miles

only common denominator I can see is the length of the comments. Or at least one. Perhaps it's an IE6 paragraph justification tag issue. I'm no html expert but I did stay at a holiday inn, once.

Yes, the length of the comment definitely has some effect. I haven't seen any issues when the comment was shorter than the set width of the comment box. However, I do have quite a few long comments in my photo of the day gallery (http://boyersmile.smugmug.com/gallery/355422) that wrap around just fine. It almost seems random to me. I think someone is just messing with me.

I guess we'll wait for SWAT to arrive.

Actualy, if you press the L and go into single image view, the problem occurs.
At least for me.

This is one for JT. It appears that this is happening in every singleImage gallery that has a comment that is long enough to wrap to two lines. I know it isn't a problem with any of our CSS or xhtml because it happens at http://mikelane2.smugmug.com/gallery/858496/1/38662699/Large (in IE only). That gallery is from my theming site which means I don't have any xhtml and the CSS was completed in early Jan and it didn't look like that for sure.

I've made a few cursory looks through the code and the CSS, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Looks like it is fixed. Thanks.:clap

:scratch not yet?

Hmmm.:scratch Maybe I'm losing my mind. Either it was working briefly earlier or I'm just really stupid. I'm wondering if I didn't accidentally view it in Firefox rather than IE6. Maybe I had too many windows open, and while switching back and forth, I got lost in a time warp or something.:dunno Maybe I should just go back to bed and hope that it was all a dream. Maybe you shouldn't pay any attention to my mindless rambling.
