Original........... 100 ISO, S230 ELPH, 2048X1536 f 4.0 I couldn't tell but they smugmug reports this is probably equivalent to using a 51 mm in 35, 1/500th
I am going to go check again to make sure this is the original, if it is, I have to make a PSD copy, if it is, I will just leave it here, if it isn't, I will let you know, it should be said it was, but I thought I straightened the gazebo??
And this already is.

I think this is better but I'm not sure. I like the shot but it looks a little faded out to me.. maybe it's the Elf. Or maybe it's a bit overexposed.. I'm not sure Ginge.

I like this one better now, but the man still blends too much into the fence in the background. I always try to consider my backgrounds so the subject stands out as much as possible. It isn't always easy.

Not that my opinion really means anything but I like the first and third pictures. I think I like the man the best with the black and white. I might be way off but when I look at that photo the few white caps in the water distract my attention away from the man. I think it might look better if you took them out. They don't really add to the picture anyway. Just my 2 cents worth.

but that's just me and my funky eye. Some of them (especially this one) may be too extreme.

I love the kid surrounded by pigeons, and it doesn't both me a bit that he's centered - it's like an apron of birds. The only thing I don't like is the harsh, midday-like contrasty light. I suspect it's not possible to really fix that in post. A shame, because it's a wonderful moment.

what about the boy's face. I have been looking at this so long, I am not objective any longer. I promised Lynn, I promised myself, that I would not change it. But I thought Shem Creek was sharp, now I am wondering about the boy's face. It is not in the sun, so it is less contrasty, is it soft? Should I try to sharpen it? Please comment. I can't start a new thread, I hope this is seen.

Ginger you need to create an overlay adjustment layer of 50%grey, and use a soft brush with WHITE in the foreground and paint over his face to lighten in however much you desire. Cletus taught me this and it is very easy to do .
Open your image in PS, and open the Layer pallette. At the bottom of the layers palette are a series of icons - a circle with an f, a square and a circle inside it, a folder, a circle half B&W, and a small square within a square, and the everpresent trash can. Press on the next to the right icon, the square within a square while you also press the ALT-key.
This will bring up the "NEW LAYER" box - here you will press on the drop down menu of the MODE menu and highlight the OVERLAY command - when you do this a new box appears in the "NEW LAYER" box that offers to 'Fill WITH OVERLAY-neutral color (50% GRAY) - check this box, and then click OK on the "NEW LAYER" Box
You will now see an adjustment layer added over the background layer in the layers palette.
Set you foreground color to white in the tools box - simply typing d and then clicking on the little curved arrow will bring up white as the foreground color - NOW YOU'RE READY TO GO TO WORK
Use a soft brush with the opacity set to 10 or 15% and begin to paint over the lads face and watch it brighten up - if you over do it , switch to black and paint out the over lightened area. If this does not seem to work, check the tool settings and make sure the brush setting is in OVERLAY mode.
The use of and adjustment layer to lighten or darken an image is a great tool taught to me by Cletus who deserves all the credit.
This will seem a little complicated at first, but just follow the directions step by step and you will be doing it in a fllash. You're are gonna love the control this gives you over your images. :deal

Pathfinder, anyone, do you like the lighter face, it is the bottom one a few posts up? I think it blends into the lighter grass too much.
OK, I did a third one. There might not be much difference, and I can't look through a viewfinder and see anything, but I worry that there is too much difference and that he looks too pale.
What do you all think, my objectivity is shot. I have to be ready to leave, I hate loose ends.
Anyone?

ginger
Ginger - I agree that the grass is too bright and distracting - I took the liberty of downloading the first of the three images you posted above.
I cropped slightly on the left to get the child slightly off center and to remove the white building in the upper left corner. Then I created an Overlay adjustment layer like I descrbed - I used a soft white brush to lighten his face, his arm, and some of the under exposed pigeons. I then used a soft black brush to darken the grass, and the superior border of the image as well as the overexposed pigeons in the sunlight. While doing this I noticed that there is an elliptical area that is desaturated slightly inferior and to the right of the little boy in the origianal image I downloaded by right clicking. I have pointed to this area with a red arrow in the image I will upload for your comparison. I think this is an editing error in PS somewhere along the way - ya think?
Anyway - how do these two images compare?

shadows/highlights/contrast, Cletus/Pathfinder grey erase, USM, (Started over, couldn't make a lot of editing errors, didn't edit much, smile)
ginger
I desaturated the green and the yellow a bit, to tone down the grass. I have to get this done tonight. I could not log on tonight, took Bill about an hour. I backed up my photos again, I am really afraid that some time we are not going to be able to bring the computer up at all.
I like the composition. I don't see it as centered. I see it as heavy on the left in an L shape, to make a triangle on the left, including the boy the gazebo, and house and the birds. I just like it.
http://gingersnap.smugmug.com/photos/9015248-L.jpg
OK, I did some more stuff, took one of the photos off, I wanted the grass a bit less obtrusive. I think I like it now. (I even put a gradient filter on with soft light, the dark part at the top, at about 20% grey like fog) Brings the birds out, I think.
(I took RAW photos tonight. I am not sure how to put them on the computer, and I know they are safe while they are on the card, and the computer is not being stressed with large files.)

gingerHi Ginge... On the last one.. the one in the challenge, I think you are almost there.. (corse I thought you were before) I think the boys face is just a tinsey bit pade and faded. I think you are on the right track but I think you've just overdone it a tad. Nearly there.. it's a great shot.. don't fret.
Lynn :clap :D Looking at it again Ginge the birds are really there... it's just the face but don't go mad and overcorrect.. it's almost in my humble. By the way.. I love this all in one thread thing. I'ts MUCH easier to find the latest post and more compact.. I was missing loads the other way. Also it's easier to compare scrolling down rather than having to jump from one thread to another... I tend to lose interest easily...

Well, I help you out, I take things off a lot, then nothing I say really relates. Did you go to the challenge? Or did you go by what I said here.
Before I went to bed, I don't feel well, but before I went to bed, I changed it again and realized that I no longer knew much of anything as far as which ones were there.
I don't like this all in a row thing, whether you are bored or not the other way. I sat here for an hour, before I went to bed hoping that someone would come "back". All I need is a bit.
So, which one are we talking about? I will go look at the challenge myself, but I will haunt you..............drive everyone more nuts, if I need feedback and can't get it.

Yes I think just about everyone has issues with color. When I put anything up I usually up the saturation a bit.. it's different for everyone as everyone's monitor is different. Just go by what you see and adjust it to look right on the challenge. Make two copies if nec and keep one in another file. Remember.. you can't really get it perfect as what I see on MY monitor is different to what everyone else (and you) see on yours..

The color is different in Adobe, here, smugmug and on The Challenge. Is the one on the challenge too red, or is it finally right?Hey Ginger,
Here's a help section/tutorial on
display color (http://www.smugmug.com/help/display-color) which has a pointer to why Photoshop sometimes (more like usually) displays the color differently than you see it through a web browser (like on smugmug or dgrin).
Now for the really easy part: skin tones. Skin tones intimidate almost everyone because they seem so subjective. But there's a very simple trick to see if you're in range. It doesn't matter how your monitor is calibrated or whether Photoshop is displaying things differently or even if you're color blind. It doesn't even matter if you don't know the true skin tone of the subject.
Sound too good to be true? It is. But it's true anyway.
Here goes: Open your photo and pick the eyedropper tool. Also open the info window that shows colors (see pic below). Hover the eyedropper over the skin tones and look at the magenta and yellow values.
http://cmac.smugmug.com/photos/9180384-L.jpg
The screen shot doesn't show it, but the eyedropper is hovering over the boy's cheek. The magenta (M) value is 54%. The yellow (Y) value is 40%.
If it's skin, yellow must at least equal magenta. If they're equal, that implies very fair skin, like a baby's. 2-3% more is usually about right for caucasians. Olive-skinned people can be as much as 15% higher.
That's it.
You can reduce magenta by going to hue/saturation --> red channel --> desaturate by 7% or so. You can increase yellow by going to levels --> blue channel --> slide the center so it goes from 1 to .9 or so. Or use curves.
Piece of cake.
But...but...but... What if his *actual* skin is not the color you just made it? Doesn't matter. He wants his skin to have more yellow than magenta. All caucasians do. He wants to believe that's what his skin looks like even if it doesn't.
But...but...but... Who cares what he wants? I want truth! Doesn't matter. Every magazine on earth uses this guide so they all change the skin tones to have more yellow than magenta, so when we see skin that has more magenta than yellow in a photo we don't believe it anyway, even if it's true. Deal with it.
Clear as mud?
Thanks,
Baldy

Thanks, so much, Baldy. I have heard you all kind of discussing this in regard to print materials, or something, then became paranoid.
Also, Andy suggested I lighten, and then I was really up a creek, lol. Do caucasions have a specific preference as to a shaded face, a sunlit face, etc?
Anyway, thanks, I am going right UP to CS to check this out. My only fear is how to find the info window that shows colors.
I will PM you, or something, if I can't.
Thanks again, ginger
PS, at this point, shhh, don't tell Andy, but I don't care what the boy wants, hehe, all I care is what Andy and other judges want. No principles here, ain't got none.
I am very glad for the information, though, as I was eavesdropping on your discussions, that meant I had a "Little" information, a little bit of anything is worse than none.:D

There are some good photos going up. I just had a grandchild, but I don't think a trip to Charlotte would get me photos that good.
He hasn't "formed" enough yet, and his mother looks a mite tired, he was 10 lbs.

The cell phone guy is good. He's alone because the restaurant is closed? Or is he together because he's with the person on the phone. Reach out and touch someone - guess he's together. The subject as a whole doesn't pull me in so much.
The boy with the birds. - Great catch on that subject. I definitely like the color version. Composition is more simplified with the crop, nice balance after getting rid of the tree in the middle. Great work with the shadows and light . Why the B&W at all? It seems too dark and shadowy, no detail in the shadows. Why take away the color? B&W doesn't add anything. The color adds. The subject makes me want to stay and look. It seems like a great moment. The color adds life and energy. Says, together - all God's creatures. I like it a lot.
Amazing Grace - Another unique capture, the cross in the water. Don't see that every day. And a person walks out there? Great catch. Very alone. Stormy day too. Great mood. The cross is a hook, it's a special moment. Nice blue toning, I think it gives the B&W a glow a deeper mood. I like it.
The lady with the dog - she looks alone in a busy restaurant. Makes me wonder about what she is thinking. But, not a real grabber. Is it a little oof?
Fisherman on the dock in the challenge thread - Like the shot. Intrigues me. He's centered but the walker tells his story. Nice B&W conversion. This is good too. Hard to decide. Maybe some other people can help with the decision.

Snappy, I wish someone would come give me another opinion on these. I forgot about this one, too. I had to defrag, and defrag again, after I freed up another 30% of my hard drive. And CS still wouldn't work. Won't work, I should say. It says it is at the end of the scratch disk??? As far as I know I have no scratch disk, don't know what one is.
The same thing did work on PS 7, but I am worn out. It is very grey here. Not like in this photo, darker and duller. Kind of like winter, just before dark.
I would like some more opinions, I might just go with this............. It is how I feel right now. Only I don't have quite the pride that it looks like he has.

Yes, Ginger, this one says alone too. Very much so. The problem now is to pick the best out of a bunch of good images. I think this one could use something to make the guy stand out a bit. More contrast? I don't know. If I were you, I would start a new thread with a different title. Like "Final decision". I know they said one thread each, but this one that says "attention Lynn" will not get other peoples attention. Of course I don't think there are many members online at the moment. Maybe later. You could try sending a PM to a few.

I told myself I wouldnt critique anyone elses photos until I got my equipment and started shooting myself and started making entries, but I really feel like letting you know what I think about your posts. In my opinion, which isnt always the greatest, I feel Amazing Grace is the best of the bunch. I cant explain why, but at first glance this image just jumped out at me. Although all of your other shots were very good, none of them had the immediate impact thats this one did. For me at least. Just like Snappy said in her last post the one of the man on the bench is a very nice photo, but needs something to make the man stand out. If you feel you can do that I think these two images would be very hard to choose between. But seeing the images the way they are right now I really like Amazing Grace much better. Hope this helped a little. I am a firm believe in the effect of having an image be able to just jump out at you and pull you in. Whice I believe this one does. Very nice work.

Snappy, I could PM you, but I have to say I can't make a new thread. I had about 10 threads on here when Pathfinder made his suggestion re combining threads. I was the offender. Then someone combined mine, and this was the title. I have been a trouble maker for weeks, I just can't do that.
I have thought of putting an SOS on the people thread, or some other place besides the challenges.
Nice of Mike wasn't it!!!!
Now I am going to look at that again, and you can paint a red cross on top of the old man's bald head. :1drink Oh, and drink, too, that would be good. I think I have some kind of fruit drink in the fridge, the one fridge I keep my Picassos and stuff on. :rofl

I understand about the new thread, but you could say I suggested it. :wink
Anyway, putting an SOS somewhere else is a good idea. I've done that myself. How about a PM to Baldy or whoever it was who combined your threads and asking them to change the title? Don't know what else to do. It was nice of Mike to give his opinion. :lust I did notice another park bench shot in the challenge. Hard to get a shot of a unique subject. You've got two.

I dont know if my opinion matters much but my favorite is "amazing Grace", The girl on the cross on the beach.
My second favorite is the man on the bench. Good luck

Ginger...
Snappy asked me to take a look at this thread for you... This one is beyond a doubt, my favorite... I like the fact that he is alone, and yet not alone.
Very nice... Like the composition and the colors, nice lighting... Nice shot all around.

Like the desaturated one better. But, still like the girl on the cross the best.

Only phone I have, and it can be difficult with its mind of its own. I never showed this, didn't think there was enough oomph, or something.

A very special picture, IMO. I went back that night, the cross was there, but the tide was out, the cross was high and dry and the interest was not there. I was just sitting on a storm ravaged beach, high, when I I saw this one woman walk over to the cross, I was lucky and got her in mid step.

Snappy, you all, did you ever see my set of photos called "It Is Just Like A Man".
The set is under the people, etc thread. It is funny. My daughter, not given to
much praise, she said she thought it was hysterical.
I don't know how to promote something here.

No faces showing, I wonder if I could use it, but for what I have no idea. It is best in the series. I am a story teller.
