Well, thanks to Harry I've taken my first wildlife shots! They weren't spectacular by any means, but since this was my first time actually using a DSLR (Harry's D100, incidently) I'm pretty happy. I actually got a few usable pictures out of the 100 that I took! THese were taken at the Viera Wetalnds where we will be going next week during the big shoot.

I for the life of me don't remember what all of these are called. Harry told me, but there was so much information for me to absorb today that my mind is dropping it all! A little help Harry? :D

Great 1st time out. Good work. I love # 1. He's looking right at you. I think that is a Night Heron, but I'm not a Florida bred, so not familiar with those birds.

Here is a link to the gallery from the rest of the decent pictures I took today. There aren't many, but more than I expected to get!!

Nice series Rhuarc, some of the images are a tad soft and could use a little more contrast, very good composition.

Thanks! Yeah, Harry said the softness was due to the shutter speeds. I was shooting with his D100 in Apeture mode with an 80-400, on a cloudy day, and alot of these were at 400mm. All of the were handheld. If you look at the Exif's most of the shutter speeds are pretty low to be trying to capture perfectly sharp pictures. (At least that's what Harry told me!)

I'm hoping I can get some similar shots this next week that are much clearer and sharp.

You got some good results. You did quite well considering it was an absolutely crappy day. We had thunderstorms in the AM and when we went out it was completely overcast. You were shooting handheld at ISO 400 & 500 with the aperture failry wide open and your shutter speeds at 400mm were between 1/160 sec and 1/250 sec. In addition to that it was your first time using a DSLR.

Once we get some decent light you are going to get some outstanding shots. :thumb

they're very good shots for a first timer and poor light ! the first 2 are green herons, the 3rd is an Ibis , don't know the other ..Seems like the Viera Wetlands is all set to make a birder off everybody ! Good luck with more shooting !
