I am looking for 70+- to 300mm telephoto. The local wolf camera guy has recommended a Quanaray lense, over any of the canon lenses, what do you think?

Quantaray is Ritz's house brand. I would be surprised if any of them were rated very highly.

It all depends on how much money you have.

The Canon 70-200/2.8 IS is a wonderful lens, but it's $1600 on a good day.

BLOODY NORA !!!! $1600 nearly the price of your camera fishmonger.

The Canon 75-300 f4.0-5.6 at $154 (list $270) is a way better choice at the low end.

And the $400 (list $700) 75-300 f4.0-5.6 IS (image stabilised) lens is one of the greatest deals in lenses today.

Stay far away from Quanaray crud.

You can forget about all the reviews that tell you that lens goes soft on the long end - remember it only goes soft around the periphery where our 300D chip doesn't record anyway. You'd see a big difference with a 35mm.

Here is a shot I did at 300mm (490mm equivalent). The only postprocessing was colors/contrast, no sharpening (*but I use the custom Set 1 with sharpness cranked up +1, I hate the colors on Parameter 1 and 2):

...and on the bright side once you buy the 70-200/2.8 L IS most other lenses seem resonably priced (or even cheap!). until you start talking prime in the 400 and up, you could pick up a an old GS for the price of those things.

My advice, stay away from the "L" glass, it becomes an addiction, it will eat you, your bank account and all available credit. (but their sooooooo sweet!)

Thanks for the feedback, I think the 75-300 IS is the one for me.
