Photoshop Elements 3.0

To add RAW support and the healing tool, as well as other useful tools.

The Windows version will add many of the Photoshop Album features.

The Mac version will not have those features, but will rely on iPhoto or other (I use iView) apps for cataloging.

But RAW support in a $90 photoshop app, now that's cool.

Available in November.

So, if what I do in PS is mostly the (infrequent) RAW conversion, including WB and exposure adjustments, plus sometimes cropping a photo, and sometimes adding text to a photo, is Elements 3.0 all I really need?

I have both and really I could make do with elements but I'm a brat an I want it all so I have photoshop cs as well. I'm not sure if Elements has a healing brush? but thats about all i'ts missing I think.. and you can always use the clone tool.. I think Elements is a powerful program and a great buy.. and I suppose the answer from me in my humble opinion would be ... yes :D others might disagree.

Another route, is to buy an old version of Photoshop and upgrade for about $150. I believe you can go back as far as ver 5.5 I think it would be OK if someone gave you the old version, as long as they were not using it anymore. The curves feature and Hightlight/shadow feature of PS CS seem to be the big difference in the programs as far a digital photography goes.

I believe there is a healing brush of some sorts with 3.0.

I just received my copy of PS Elements 3.0 today (from Amazon w/ $40 in rebates), and have been playing around in it. Seems to be much improved over 2.0, and it may be my imagination, but it seems to launch a bit faster too.

For grins, I shot a few RAW images, then dumped them into my iMac via Lexar firewire reader (zoom!), and opened them with Elements. Sure, it's just a small sample, but the ability to open and adjust RAW images, then open them in the editing part of the program instantly is a major timesaver. It was such a hassle opening with the Canon SW, then saving and opening with Elements for editing that I ended up just shooting medium or large JPEGs instead.

While it was a really small sample, it seems that the default settings on my Canon 10D are really good and don't need a lot of exposure or color help. I may just have to get another 1GB card and start shooting more RAW.

In any event, it's well worth $50. :deal

In the meantime...

The integration between iPhoto and PSE3 is seamless, as you would expect. The only downside is that you can't import RAW files into iPhoto, so the integration at that point is somewhat moot. However, if you're shooting jpegs, then it's a no-brainer to stick the card in the reader, have the images jump right into iPhoto as a new roll, erase the originals from the card, then double-click on the image you want to play with in iPhoto to have PSE3 open up as the editor.

The only feature that I can think of that I might like to see is more extensive batch-processing capabilities. But then again, there's gotta be something to make people buy PSCS, right? :dunno
