View Full Version : Hey baldy & mods....
Ok guys im in love with this site. There is clearly some guys here who are interested in helping newbies (me) & some good photographers.
What about a monthy photo comp ?
I have see it on other photography sites but the bar is raised a little too high for me (they seem to be all pro's) & i think this site offers something for the learner.
Maybe give 3 titles... ie windows..stone & doors just for ideas. The other site i saw had a voting area where you choose one from each cat & the highest voted won. Too hard ? Insane ?
It gives something to try for.

I like the idea... and why does advrider have an intro page with photos and dgrin doesn't???
In terms of photo competition, how about photo of the week to be displayed on an entrance page?

Lord of the Wasteland, Your Hummungusosity, I think you have a good idea there. I think it would be fun and challenging. :nod

I agree, I think it would be a great venue for newbies like myself to get photos critiqued.

ParkerI think we already use this forum for critique, but the idea of having a theme as humungus suggested would give you a little something in the back of your head to shoot for that week/month, whatever.

Yeah your right. Either way, I think it is a great idea.

Why not create a forum called the "Assignment Desk". In it, post the assignment
and results?

Great idea! I was wondering when this would come up because at smugmug I'm asked about it from time to time.
I'm surprised at how many posts here are to show photos. I thought the focus would be more on cameras and stuff, but I love photos so much I like it this way.
So I could set up photo galleries, one for each contest, but we'd need someone to decide if they're monthly, weekly, by topic, whatever. And we'd need judges? Or votes? How would that work?
(Sorry for my silence. I got busy for 4 days.)
Baldy....this site
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Olympus_405060/
has a photo comp each month....(have a look at the quality !!!!!!!!) You simply click on a 'vote' button & it takes you to the 3 competition subjects & then you pick which one you like the best. Everyone can vote & it is annon..anonamo....annomon...secret.
I think it just gives a focus point & continuance.

Finally!
Separate forum for contests.
Separate thread for each contest.
Set time limit per contest. Each contest lasts two weeks.
Maximum of five entries per person per contest.
Judges are the last three winners plus moderators.
A fresh topic each week, so that there are always two active contests.
Have predetermined criteria by which the photos would be judged. e.g. Composition, lighting, creativity, originality.

:ear5 entries per person? that could get crazy, no? we should go for simple.
I suggest there could be two winners to these contests, one chosen by a mass vote and one chosen by some "almighty" judge. I've seen many photo comps like that and its fun to see the differences in what general people find "nice" and how a pro judge would give more weight to technical points.
I like Baldy's idea of an assignment forum as well. Each week a new thread/competition would be posted, a gallery opened up for us to submit our photos and then judging/voting at the end of the week with results posted in the same thread.

I think photo comp is a great idea... it would give us Newbies something to aim for, and an assignment.

Good feedback, anyone else have ideas? :ear I've been interested in some kind of comp. from day one, so I'm pretty excited about it. Bottom line the format doesn't matter much to me.
I guess the only thing that is really an issue is the time frame: working folks might have trouble finding a lot of shooting time in just one week... that's why I suggested two weeks per competition.

:earI like everything except the five entries per person. I think it's important to have more than one entry per person, but I think five is too many. Maybe two or three.
I really like the two active contests at any one time idea!

I like the constest idea(s) as well.
I think the way they get run over at www.fredmiranda.com (http://www.fredmiranda.com) is pretty good.
Members vote for the coming topic and then submit one photo per contest. Two of the mod's then select a best of the submissions that then get voted on by the general members whilst the next constest starts. Hopefully people wouldn't take this so serious that they would get multipple accounts to vote/post etc.
I will say though that it will be a pretty fair commitment from someone to run it , another good reason for a 2 week time frame instead of a 1 week.

I belonged to a camera club in Massachusetts and my favorite part of the membership experience was monthly slide critiques by some of the more senior members.
I think it would be fantastic to have here.

I assume baldy or the mods could see their IP...if someone was that keen then good luck to them anyway. I def think 2 weeks is the go also. Then a week to vote & then a week to give ideas for the next subjects.

That sounds like a good format.
I think Baldy's in favor of the idea. But with the server attacks he's been busy. I'm sure in a week or two he'll make it happen. I haven't heard of anyone who doesn't want to do it.

bump...
and i had another idea: maybe regional competitions? If there's going to be a theme, it might turn out to be something impossible for us snow covered folks to find. So maybe have 2 or 3 choices of "assignment".
That could be a problem doc...the other site i used to frequent had fairly open themes such as B&W...water....sound....refections...etc. open stuff that you could interprate...inter...inteper...decide for your self.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Thmes could be curves, converging lines, color, midday... very broad themes that really open up the creative possibilities. Ideally, the finalists would be wildly different shots which only have the theme in common. I think that would be very educational for everyone, too.
