*First Attempt on 21/lynnesite

It was nearly dark where I live, the hills cut off the sun, it had been a pretty sunset. But on the horizon was this solo cumulus cloud. Dark at the bottom from being dark down here, up to sunny at the top. Eligible? Opinions? :dunno

OK, never mind. I went back and read the rules, no sunsets, though this isn't a sunset I suppose it doesn't qualify. <shrug>

not direct sunset shots. shot of what the sun is setting *on* qualify. i'd say this counts., but remember, it's up to the voters :D

Thanks, Andy--I need to do more low light shooting with this camera, that's what I like about challenges, breaking out of the mold.

Thanks also for the RAW tutorial, gotta start doing that too. I'm concerned about storage time to the card since I shoot action so much. Will give it a try tonight.

Very interesting cloud formation and coloration to say the least. I think it was Tuesday of this week that I was shooting the clouds, just to keep for my "SKY" files. I use them when I am really desperate for a nice background when I have a photo that would be great if the existing sky were not so dull.... If all else fails, I think this one might well help you out at some time.

Also wanted to add that I LOVED your last Challenge entry! Voted for it. I would be proud to own a print of that one to hang on my family room wall!

I can't seem to make myself shoot after dark (yet). Last night I was mesmerized by the clouds, and one of my horses was willing to be the model, trotting up the hill towards the sunset:

That shot works, Lynn. According to Andy's definition, it doesn't have to be dark, just after sunset. I time it, looked in the paper, but anytime the light is reflecting off of something else, like those clouds, and with the horse in the photo, well it is a fine shot, and it does work.

It does not have to be dark, as I understand it. Of course, I don't know what they are going to say when they pick shots. They could say that it just didn't appear to be a night shot, but that is not in the rules. There is no real definition of a night shot, except that it be taken after sunset.

I love that you take such care in shooting your horses. I really do believe that you could make money with some of your prints, but I am sure you have heard that before.

The first image is very nice, but you are right in saying that the background is lacking... Even when I worked exclusively in my darkroom, I would have superimposed this horse into another frame. No shame in doing that you know, at least in my humble opinion.

The second photo, the "night" one, had real potential... Too bad that the horses feet were lost at the bottom of the frame... But I know you will be out there again, soon... possibly even this evening.

I have not, as yet taken one photo for this challenge. While I love night photography, I have not been motivated by the night scenes I have encountered lately... Not too mention that I am just not up for the challenges... Divergences of styles and concepts... For me, this time of year calls to me, urging me to shoot body forms, and body landscapes in the natural surroundings I live in. The temperatures are cooling, and there are less folks around now that school is in session... These are too often not appropriate for this challenge forum. Horses would be easier...

I'm a professional equine photographer, for the last 18 months or so, and a good check is on its way from Smugmug sales in Aug. Yeah, too bad about the feet but I got one shot at him heading up the hill into the clouds, furiously hand-bracketing and somewhat lucky the shot was in focus. The others were too but one is too silhouette-like and one he has his ears back and the other his anus is a bit too prominent. LOL. Am more than willing to mask out offending items but have not embraced full background replacements. The bay horse appears to be floating, a clouds replacement would be neat.

I shoot for various equine mags, do farm shoots (that's where the top image came from), my stuff is used for artist renderings, I do technical equine clinician stuff for books and mags, etc. I like outdoor photography in general, not much of a studio type. Am attracted to the fine art style, with a developing specialty of movement+stillness in the same shot.

Am not sure I'm up for this challenge either. My avatar photo, however, is entered over at dpchallenge.com in the "backlighting" challenge, and to my surprise appears to be headed for the top ten. DPchallenge is full of really top shooters and my stuff has not been competitive there in large part to not being very good at themes; I submit inappropriate stuff. Plus their time frame is only one week, very tight. Studio stuff does well there. I'm continually amazed at what people come up with, and browing the entries/voting helps me widen my scope.

Had 20 minutes to run a quick composite of your horse & Cloud formation.... Really needs a grounding layer as well... But I have to run take my boys to pick up a buddy for the bi-weekly sleepover.
