E1, 50mm ED, f16, 1/30 sec, ISO100, Studio Lighting

Quaich is a Scots rendering of the Gaelic word "cuach", meaning a cup.

Centuries ago, they were built of wooden staves, and by the 17th century were often mounted in silver or made entirely from the metal.

Used for visitors welcomes or farewell cup by proud Clan Chiefs, worthy merchants or humble crofters, the quaich has kept its simple but beautiful shape and friendly purpose.

Of course, I had to drink the tastey single malt after this photo...:1drink

Neat shot, nice designs on the cup. How did you light it?

I love the design etched into the base of of the cup, and on the handle too, the lighting is great too.

Thanks! Picked up the cup on a trip over to Stratford, ON. Big Scottish population around there and that's my heratige as well.

I used an AB800 shot through a poor-man's diffusion screen - tracing paper. I've got a 3x3 "frame" of 1/2" pvc and I bought a roll of 36" tracing paper from the art supply store in town. Got the tip from the book "Light Science & Magic".

Placed the light/screen at about 60° right of the camera and at a height where it was about 30° from horizontal.

Thanks, bud! Single malts are one of those weaknesses I wish I could still afford.

Once in a while though - Duty Free is your friend.

I really like living in a border town :thumb

Skip,

The design is what made me want to buy that particular model. Had to twist the wife's arm as it was an extra $20 :rolleyes

It's a traditional "thistle" design. Here's a link with a little bit o' history:

Was it good? Warmed my heart all the way down :wink
