Got my new 430ex in the mail yesterday:clap

Never having used an external flash this thing is going to be a blast. Went to Walmart today and picked up an Orchid.

Taken with the 300d, tamron 28-75, and 430ex. Used a poster board as a back drop. Used the flash on auto with 1/200 SS, f/8 ISO 100 FEC +1. They look a little bright on the white but ACR says there not blown:dunno

What flash to get for my Sony f828! So I envy your decision and you have hands on your new flash!

Looking good -- but I'd like to see a little more detail in the white petals. May be a difficult chore, maybe there isn't any detail? Can you put the flash to one side for side lighting and will it still work? You might get some more detail in the petals that way.

Or try a little less light?

I bet you're going to have a lot of fun experimenting -- and that's a great choice of black and white for your first project.

Nice shot. Nice colors and composition.

While the whites aren't blown, they are pretty bright, I can't see any detail in the white petals. You might try setting a negative compensation on the flash. A flash bracket to raise the flash off the camera may also be helpful.

Thank you Dee. I got the flash from photo.net BNIB for $200 couldn't pass it up. I'm going to try the orchid again and see if I can bring out some more detail in the whites.
