View Full Version : The (Old Photos Only) Dgrin Game - Comments Thread

Guys, post your comments on the game, photos, etc, here in this thread.

Here's the Game Thread (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=25616)

I'll start: Read the rules. Pics only, no chatter. Only ONE pic in the game thread, at a time, until someone associates with yours. Short captions are OK in this game - date/location/something unique :D

oops, I some how missed the one photo thing. IMHO, the info with the photos, who, where, what made it worth doing, rereading now with that info missing makes it a waste.

contextual info is lost if it is out of context. I doubt many people will view the thread and scroll the comments thread at the same time. I understand keeping comments out of that thread, I do not understand taking out pert info about the shot.

We can, of course, change it -- let's see what people say, ok? Maybe a short caption wouldn't be a bad thing? :dunno

On the other Photo Association Game thread, I like the "no talking" rule. But for this game, some context for the shot would make it more interesting. But only a few words. Subject, year, relationship, etc. No comments on association to previous pic.

Very cool! There was an article in "American Photo" recently about a guy who went to a small town area in Arkansas and purchased every photo made by a certain portrait photographer in the early 1900s - he amassed a colleciton of thousands - they were very similar to yours!

Thanks, i love those old photos. Alot of them, including this one, are from Kosice, Slovakia (used to be from Hungary i believe) All the ones i have posted are from people somehow related to me. Our family has 1000s of them, and they are slowly but surely being digitized, mainly by my dad. I think we are up to 6Gb already. Quite a few in good condition. Even a few from the 1800s!

I have heard about stories similar to the one you mentioned; people going somewhere to find pictures of a certain photographer. I have a hard time keeping up with my own fotos, let alone got time to find others. Almost all my fotos are film, and i need to scan nearly all of them...:D

what do you mean by used to be from Hungary? Like way back, when it was all the Austro-Hungarian empire? Kinda funny as I was educating Andy on the history of Czechs and Slovaks, not Czechoslovaks, the other day.
:D

Kosice is a really nice city, btw. It's second in size to Bratislave, but in my opinion, a nicer place to visit.
:nod

Ivar, you have quite a collection! wow!

Slovakia used to be a part of Hungary, till somewhere in the 1910s i believe, i don't remember the exact year. After that the Czechoslovak period, and then the Czech and Slovaks, not too long ago. Even I can remember that happening, and i am not that old :D

The problem is that the collection keeps on growing, and growing. The bigger problem is that with most photos i have no idea of what or who is on them.:dunno My grandparents who are still alive know most of them, my dad already knows alot less, and i know hardly anything about them. So alot of notes and folders :D

Andy, did the article give a reason as to why the guy was buying all the photos?

What's the story behind it?I totally missed this comment, sorry mate.

I'm not 100% sure what it is. I know the photo somehow belonged to/is of my grand-fathers brother. He was stationed in Indonesia during the 2nd world war, as a medical doctor. This photo is either from the return of his batalion from Indonesia, or from the return of Queen Wilhelmina to the Netherlands at the end of the same war.

It's difficult to say, as i have literally 1000s of old family photos (1850s-1950s) and not all are marked well. They are usually grouped, so i have a pretty good idea though. I have about 200 of the war in Indonesia as well, some pretty neat ones actually.

I shot this picture of my grand mother (my mother's) in 1969/65 with my father's Rolleicord.
I can remember where this was shot. She is looking to the street as we were on the 3.ed floor.
The photo is brand new, because it was recovered today!
I can remember her very well because she was very poor but/and gentle.
In 1958 when my parents went to Brussel's World fair, she kept me and gave me milk and bread and sweet. Oh how I loved that sweet !!...

Myself in the middle and my parents back in 1956/57.
I was then 8/9 years old.
I do remember this was shot by the beach in winter and with the Rolleicord.
My father developed the picture himself.:thumb

Correction:
I read in the back of the photos and my mother wrote there that I was 9 years old and it was shot between November and December

This photo was shot by my father most probably on the 60ies.
This is inside a boat in the port of Setubal and they are fishermen.
My father developed the negatives and the photos himself in a small compartment of the house, under the stairs !
I can remember that quite clearly.

The picture was taken with the Roleicord 6*6.
Some of these pictures, which size is 30*40 cms, were presented in competitions in Europe.

OK Thank you. :D:thumbHi Antonio, maybe this makes it more clear.
It's the first post in the old photos game thread:
POST ONE PHOTO. Then someone posts another, related, somehow, to your photo. And so on. You can post again only after someone else has posted :DWhat I was trying to say, is you can not post a photo right after you post another photo. First, someone else has to respond by posting a photo, then you post again. Does this make more sense?

Ivan.

What I meant that had no sense, is the fact that the comments (those which were here) had no sense since they were refering to a non-existing photo in the main thread.

The rules make all the sense.

"What I was trying to say, is you can not post a photo right after you post another photo. First, someone else has to respond by posting a photo, then you post again. Does this make more sense?"
