Didn't there used to be a "save photo" link under the photo?

I'm trying to get some images to someone who is not going to get that you have to click a bunch of times to find the original sizes before you have to right click and save image.

Maybe I'm imagining it. But I thought it used to be there.

Here's the gallery in question:

thanks!

Trish, I'm out now and accessing via BlackBerry - don't have access to all my links and such - but one thing - if the photo is 800px or less at original size, there will be no "save photo" link. Else, did you CSS it out? Do you have originals enabled? Protection OFF?

Let me know, I'll be back later this evening and can help you again.

If I look at your page, the imageInfo section where the save photo link would normal be located is completely empty. That means this is NOT a CSS customization issue. This is something causing the smugmug server not to put anything into the imageInfo area (including the save photo link).

You should visit the customize gallery page for this gallery and try turning on some things that would be in the imageInfo area. For example, turn on camera exif info, make sure originals are enabled, comments are on, easy sharing is on, larges are on. If nothing still shows up under the photo, then it's some sort of server-side issue at smugmug. If you get the save photo link then, then you can one-by-one disable the things you don't want, making sure that save photo stays each time.

Nope, sorry.
It's only becuase all the photos at Original size, are very small :)

Trish - I turned on some stuff in your gallery setup so you could see. And, I put in a big photo = calibration print, now you can see all the stuff :)

To be technically correct here, I said that if he turned on originals, larges, comments and camera info and STILL didn't see anything, THEN it would be a server-side issue at smugmug. I did NOT say that the reason he wasn't seeing the save photo link was a server side issue.

FWIW, this is a PERFECT example of why the Save Photo link should show no matter how large the originals are as long as image protection is not on. Why should a viiewer have to figure out how to right click save just because the original doesn't exceed some smugmug trigger that makes the Save Photo link show.

So the answer is if I want to offer up the 'save photo' link to someone so they can get photos for their website, I need to give them photos larger than 800 pix.

They wanted resized to 600 pix max so I guess I'll just email the photos.

It's a little non-intuative, but I'm glad there's an answer.

thank you,
Trish

With protection off, size large, and they can just right click-save or if on Mac drag to desktop? Is that not standard?

It is standard browser behavior (I use drag/drop on windows), but I would guess that it's not well known by at least half the internet population (the neophyte half). I frequently have to show my wife how to do things like that and she spends a lot of time online. The issue is that if you don't regularly play with images from the net, you won't have learned this and most other internet sites don't require you to do that so you don't learn it. Why wouldn't you just have the Save Photo link always there if protection isn't on and no customization option has turned it off? It's soooo much more intuitive for newbies.

The unintuative part for my non-saavy recipient is that she would have to click on the photo or a link that says 'large' to get to the large size before she right clicked (pc) and saved to computer.

So even if she did know enough to right click to save image in the first place, there is no indicator to her thta she is not getting the largest file I posted for her.

That and anything that adds more required clicks to perform and action without a good reason just feels wrong. What if I had sent her 200 images?

Thanks!
Trish

It would be great if you posted a short synopsis and a link back to here.
