Cool shots Dani!
We don't have Armadillos around these parts. His ?shell? looks like metal with the sun glinting off it. Are they mean? I hope you didn't get too close.

Thanks Dana!
They arn't mean that I'm aware of.... mostly they run away or try to roll into a ball. This one tried to 'hide' in a hole.. even though his butt and tail were sticking out still LOL!!
Dad has relocated one from the yard before and it wasn't mean either!!!

Nice closeups there at the end!
Armadillos are fairly oblivious animals. The wife and I were out walking our dog once and an armadillo came out of the woods, sniffed my pant leg, then probably said something like "Oh, crap!" in armadillo-ese and went back into the woods at a slightly faster pace than before.
My dog was fairly oblivious too. I don't think he even noticed!
Never saw one of these -- even at a zoo!

One reason you see a lot of these as roadkill is because when they get spooked they jump straight up. So if you see one crossing the road and you try and straddle it, it will probably still bite the dust because it jumps as you pass over. Just a tidbit of worthless information I thought I would share.:wink

So they're common roadkill, huh? We don't have those in these parts, so that was neat to see.

We call them a possum on the half shell. :DThey are in fact fairly tame, I have picked a wild one up and held it, but then again the same can be said for most poisonous snakes. Their shell is softer than you might think, it feels more like human or pig skin stretched over cartilage, very flexible. They are a heck of a speed bump one the motorcycle. Nice shots BTW.
James.
EDIT: FYI, fotki fixed thier problem with proxies, I can see your photo's just fine now Dani.

another useless bit of armadillo trivia, I ve been told that they are one of the few remaing carriers of Leprosy, but I believe you have to eat them to get it?
