I had to go to my actual bank today - cashed a rather large check so I could go get honey's gift ... they asked me to sit down, have a cuppa coffee, they'll bring me the cash shortly... I hear the whiiiiirrrr of the counting machine, twice. A few mins later they give me the envelope and I look through it, quickly ... sure it looks like it's all there.

So, off to the jewelry store I go. Settled on the gift. I pull out the cash and start flipping off $100s. Only now, I realize, there's $1000 more in the envelope than there should be. Well, I finish at the jeweler's and then hightail it back to the bank - of course it's closed but I look in the window and see that there are several suits and this poor woman (the teller) all standing around the table with a bunch of papers.. I knock on the bank door (we're closed!!) so I persist. The security guard comes and tells me "we're closed, sorry." I say, hmmm - I think the bank manager would like to see me, and explain why.

So, they bring me in, and I say I've got $1000 too much, are they looking for it? At this point, the teller nearly faints - she's responsible for "the count" you see, and the count was off - by $1000. I handed over the $1000 and she jumped across the table and planted a sloppy-red-lipstick kiss on my cheek (the kind your Aunt Selma gives you).

I think I have a friend for life - feels good!

My friend worked at a bank and what you described is SO what happens! You probably saved her job, although she will get a reprimand. I hope I spelled Mensch correctly. I was watching the O.C. and heard it there. They were doing their Chrismukkah show.

You may never know the ramifications of what your act (of returning the money) has put into effect.

Great story Andy. It's really great to see people out there with integrity. That is one of my family's highest values. Sometimes it seems like nobody in our society holds this standard. That was a very honorable thing to do. Sure, the extra cash would've been nice but it is nothing compared to the priceless gesture of just "doing the right thing." Way to go! :thumb

This reminds of the "wallet dropping" experiment a news show did several years ago. They randomly dropped wallets around different cities in an effort to gauge honesty. I think NYC did very well and altered some people perceptions (but I seem to remember Seattle tested the best, probably a Seattle station).

There are plenty of honest people left in the world. The issue is the disshonest people are more news worthy. Hence the wild success of tv shows like cops, springer, etc, etc.

I do believe in Karma - opened the mail today and got a $450 refund check from one of the big auto companies - for: get this - refund of security deposit from a lease that ended over a year and a half ago! I had forgotten completely about it, glad they didn't :lol3

This kind of reminds me of two different conversations I had with mid to upper mid level managers where I work. The long and the short of it was they were trying to justify a hypothetical action (non work related), and the conversation ended when I said that any one who would do this is demonstrating a total lack of principle, and has no character, or honor.They don't talk to me any more. Talk all you want, but Andy was put to the test, and demonstrated, character, and honor. Thanks for letting me know there are still a few out there with values, and willing to do the right thing. Well to me banks are fair game. They move fast & have little concern for humanity ..only profit. If i found a $1000 roll on the footpath/bus then ..yep i would hand it in def because some poor sole probably needed it more than me.

I would however prob hand it back because i know the pressure the poor teller would be under but i would be doing it for them & not the bank.

That reminds me that I have to call or e-mail Amazon and tell them they can have their refund back. The books were delivered three doors down to an empty house, and we found them.

I will say that Amazon is tops! We told them books hadn't come. Immediate bank credit!

Not $1000.00..........

I am very good at small amts of honesty.
