Buying my first DSLR - Advice wanted

Hello everyone. I'm very new here and am looking for your advice...please. :huh

I'm getting ready to purchase my first DLSR. I know the camera - Konica-Minolta 7D (I am a staunch Minolta girl, I currently use a Maxxum 7xi with all the trimmings, all of which are interchangable with the 7D, and LOVE it).

My question is this... There are kits available that include lenses, memory cards, cases, card readers and the like... should I invest in a kit for one lump sum(bargain) as I learn to use my new baby or should I buy each piece separately as I learn?? :dunno

it all depends where your getting the camera from. i just recently got my 10D and the items listed below. I find myself not Urgent for a tripod or new memory card. But i will be needing to get these before long. so try looking at www.bhphotovideo.com (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/) or www.onecall.com (http://www.onecall.com/) they are very good dealers with a great record. Probably have the deals your looking for too.

a deal on B&H and if you have all the lenses you already need i would say this is a great deal. then you could just pick up a 1gig CF card and maybe run by your local camera store and try out Tripods/monopods.

Hi Lynn,

The 7D is a great choice, good luck with it. Unless you are buying from a top tier store (i.e. B&H) I would avoid most of the offered kits like the plague. Most of the included accessories are overpriced items of poor quality that you will in the end replace or throw away.

Hello Lynn and welcome to Dgrin. Some folks like the "kits". I don't care for them. I always just buy the camera body without any bells and whistles. I'd much rather just purchase the glass I really want.....even if this means waiting a while. I have sometimes even purchased the lens first and a camera body after the fact. Usually these kits include inferior items or stuff you will seldom use. Decide what kind of shooting you will be doing and purchase the appropriate equipment accordingly. Do your research on the equipment as well.

Don't know if you noticed that B&H seems to have a deal right now on this 7D ?

Don't know if you noticed that B&H seems to have a deal right now on this 7D ? Konica-Minolta is also offering a $200 rebate on the 7D. I have the PDF of the offer (good till 12/31) which I downloaded from amazon.com when I was looking at their listing of the 7D.

Since the B&H "rebate" is $200 I wonder if they have just factored in the K-M offer or if this is in addition to that?

I'm wondering why more people don't seem to recommend the Minolta 5d/7d cameras?? They seem like a great value with the built in Stabilization. IT's almost always "buy a Nikon/Canon".

these are good cameras. i know that for a fact. but the general knowledge is that Canon and Nikon both are leading in the Digital SLR world *canon mainly:wink *. And lenses with canon or nikon mounts are more commonly stocked in local shops i've come to find out.

but the main reason is because these are the names that everyone knows and is comfortable with.

Thanks so much Birdman (LOL, I love that). I've been looking around and researching for months. B&H is like a dream. I remember walking into the store in NY and just going weak in the knees. LOL. Its brilliant.

I have a bunch of lenses and filters and such that I use with my Minolta 35mm SLR and these attachments seem to be interchangable with the DSLR so thats pretty dandy.

Hey, is there a difference between a digital flash and the flash I use with my 35mm?

I've noticed all the posting regarding Nikon/Canon. LOL But I just love the weight and feel of Minolta so I'm not going brand hopping. Knowing what you like is certainly a help when looking around for a camera.

The $200 rebate is directly from K-M. YAY!!!
