Been contacted by a company that does telephone books for Northern Kentucky.
They want to buy one of my photos for use on the cover and give me credit for the photo.
So I guess my question is...give them a deal on price (good free advertisement for me) or give them the normal price ?
Thanks
Fred

FredThe normal price plus a credit. See this book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1581152078/qid=1133394218/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6593333-5411124?n=507846&s=books&v=glance) to understand why I say that.

What is a "normal" price? I don't think you have to give them a deal, since they have already told you they want to buy it.

I am no expert
I have sold a few in my area for as high as $300 and I think I under priced that photo.
Well I am going to call them on Thursday so I guess we will see.
Thanks Jim

I would think they are prepared to spend the $300-$500, so I would stick with your normal price. What is the photo? Congratulations!

Fred,
Nice work, first of all. You might consider a profitable price you can live with, plus a quarter/half size ad in the phone book. Ask them to put the page number along with the credit information about your cover page photo. This may get you a lot more customers if you are also listed in the book.
Good luck and please let us know what you do!
Regards,
Fred
p.s. - Great first name too! :D

FredHopefully you are going to get the pricing photography book. It's got page-long workups of market prices for various things. It has come in super handy for me once already. I can't say enough about it.

I got in touch with the lady from the company Maggie very nice gal
We finally worked out a price $150 might be low but I am happy with it.
I found one guy that she has been dealing with and this price was right in line.
Now here's the catch..my photo is just one of several that they are considering for the cover.
Maggie said that basically there is about 10 designers who pick photos
then they go into meeting to "fight" for your photo
So who knows :dunno
Mike I do have some questions that I think you can help me with.
She found me thru google
So I must be doing something right with keywords or something.
So I guess my question is how to stay at the top of google(without paying)
I read somewhere you said links links links
I not sure I understand this...do you mean links like posting on Dgrin ?
Anyone remember the telephone book scene from the movie "Jerk"
"The New Phonebooks Are Here! The New Phonebooks Are Here!"
if my photo gets put on the cover thats will probaly be me :lol3
Thanks

So are they purchasing it even if they don't use it, or only if they do?
Still an honor to be considered! Keep us posted.

At least you get paid. Our phone book has a photo contest every year. Send in as many pics as you want and they pick the winner. No money, but you win a weekend trip for two in Coeur d’Alene, ID. You also get your photo on a full page in the book itself.
I missed the deadline. :cry I have a friend who has won several times. Once every other year it seems. NEXT YEAR!
peace.

Well things have changed again on this so here's an update
The marketing manager and GM have got in touch with me from this company.
They were very excited and said that these types photos are just what they are looking for.
The company wants two photos and they want to do a Quater Column ad(QC)
The deimensions for QC is 2 5/16" wide x 2 5/16" deep the going rate is $663
They want to trade one to two photos for the space.
The GM is sending me a copy Telephone Directory to see how these ads look
What do you think ?
Thanks

How much do you need the money versus how much do you want the exposure? If you go with exposure, take the ad, but negotiate the space at their cost, not the commercial ad rate. (go for more space), credit on the cover at a minimum font point size and, someone suggested a directional to your ad page. That's brilliant!

First question, does having a ad in the phone book have value to you? (I will assume a yes, unless you don't want the advertising). Once you get the book, find out what the other photographers have under the heading. From being a past yellow page company employee, you would more than likely want at least a DQC (Double Quarter Column aka Business card size) with full color (if that book offers color). Remember an extra ad cost them very little $. If they don't want to pay you get more in return the $250 cash. You may have to settle for the QC but I would go for the DQC. The QC is really to small to put text and a picture in it and a DQC has enough room to include text and an image. Not that you can't do it a QC but then both become small and hard to see (especially if the phone book is a 4 column, not a 3 column book).
