Roaming Bobcat Prompts Neighborhood Warning
Swan Killed In Back Yard Of Home
<!--startindex-->VIERA, Fla. -- Sheriff's deputies in Brevard County, Fla., warned residents in a Viera subdivision Monday after an officer and several people reported seeing a large bobcat kill a swan and then roam through yards, according to Local 6 News partner Florida TodayThe bobcat, which was approximately 40 to 50 pounds, roamed through several backyard bushes behind the palm tree-lined suburban streets just off Crane Creek Boulevard.
Four deputies responded to the Cross Creek subdivision to patrol the area and to watch nearby school bus stops where children were gathered after the bobcat was spotted Monday morning.At least one deputy spotted the animal as it wandered back toward a nearby wooded area.Robert Meola told Florida Today that he watched the bobcat kill the swan in his back yard."I've never seen a cat so big," Meola said. "The swan was trying to run for its life and this cat was just tearing it up."The elusive wildcat was spotted in the Cross Creek subdivision in Viera East about 7:20 a.m., prompting several calls to 911."They are often mistaken for a panther but it was definitely a bobcat. It's probably getting chased around because of all the construction in this area," said Officer David Wigley of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.Cross Creek is part of a fast-growing residential sprawl that sits amid numerous lakes inhabited by alligators, shrinking woods with raccoons, armadillos and other wildlife typical of Central Florida.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
