First shots with my new lens

A couple shots with my new lens (Canon 500mmL 4.0) . I can't believe the difference between the Prime and the Zoom. The prime is so much easier to get sharp shots. Since I've had it the weather has been terrible and I've only been able to get a few shots but I already LOVE IT.

Shot these with the 500 and a 1.4xTC

Not the absolute greatest but I think it gives me and idea of what I may be able to capture with this lens once my skills improve.

RH what brand of TC & did it auto focus ?
I tried a non canon on my 400 prime & it wouldnt AF.

The weather's fine here (79*) so why don't you send that lens down to me until things clear up where you are at. :D Congrats on the new lens. Wow...that would be nice to have..... along with a 300mm or 400mm f/2.8 just for kicks. :huh

Primo shots and the backgrounds are great. :clap

I have shot wildlife with Sigma 70-200/2.8 and the Nikon 80-400 VR.4.5-5.6 zooms and the 300//4 and the 500/4 primes. My experience has been that the primes can not be beat.

Thanks Gus. I used the Canon 1.4x TC and yes Autofocus works great with it although a bit slower than with the lens alone.

I believe that for a lens to autofocus it's aperature must be larger than 5.6. Since a 1.4 x TC causes a reduction of 1 stop in Aperature the lens must have an Aperature of 4.0 or greater, since the 1.4TC will then make it a 8.0 lens. Therefore, if you were using the 400 5.6 then Autofocus won't work with any teleconverter :cry

I love my 500mm f/4.0 too... It is a bit heavy though. I have had it for awhile now and still have not used a tripod with it... Don't blame me for the quality of the pic... I didn't take it.

I love my 500mm f/4.0 too... It is a bit heavy though. I have had it for awhile now and still have not used a tripod with it... Don't blame me for the quality of the pic... I didn't take it.

IanI have been doing some anti-corruption and anti-terrorism work here. It can be kind of exciting :): The lens was purchased to beef up my lineup and has been used for everything from portraits and landscapes to surveillance shots. My current lineup now consists of:

17-35mm f/2.8 L
24-70mm f/2.8 L
70-200mm f2.8 IS L
500mm f4.0 IS L

I sold off my 100-400 IS L and my 85mm f/1.2 L prior to buying the 500mm. And if/when I get the money, the 17-35mm f/2.8 will be replaced with primes with 14mm and 20mm being reasonable replacements
