How to setup the cockpit

Does anyone have any recommendations on what settings to set the computer monitor Brightness / Contrast? I'm editing and viewing photos and I'm not sure if the photos are light or dark or if I'm setup wrong. What's the general rule of thumb?

There's a lot of contention in this. Some think you have to calibrate your monitor with hardware or software tools. Others think this is hooey.

I personally bought a Spyder 2 (hardware) calibrator and was amazed at the change. I would recommend it if you really want to see your edits properly.
