The Falkirk Wheel was a Millenium Project to link the Forth & Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. The wheel lifts barges and pleasure boats from the lower canal (Forth & Clyde) by flooding a revolving platform. The flare was caused from the windows of a barge already on the wheel whilst another barge enters the lower platform.
