Was reading an interesting article on image stabilization, how it works, its limitations, etc. Got me to thinking: will an IS lens still stabilize properly when the lens is pointed straight (or mostly) up? If it matters any, I'm most curious about Canon's IS system, since I own some of those lenses.

If it matters any, I'm most curious about Canon's IS system, since I own some of those lenses. An almost vertical shot 400mm 1/60th with the 100-400 L IS lens. Nothing to lean on, handheld, freestanding but with the IS

That was not the article I read, but it was a good article. I'll have to venture back to the bookstore tomorrow and write down the mag and date I saw.

Another interesting thing they talked about was why the IS can become erratic when used on a tripod. (It has to do with the extreme lack of motion causing large positive feedback loops in the mechanism.) On a few lenses Canon actually has a "tripod" mode. It somehow notices when it is on a tripod and the IS switches into a special mode to counter the effects of mirror slap. Slick trick. Unfortunately, neither of my lenses has this mode.
