Beginner Question

Alright I am relatively new around around and this is probably the wrong place for this thread but can someone suggest some intro photography books or websites that is good for beginners? I am not looking for any fly by night and I understand it takes practice and time to get better... just looking for a place to start.

Check at your local public library and camera stores, they may have information about free or low-cost courses - and of course the library has BOOKS.
