View Full Version : Thumbnails - same size ?

I've looked at quite a few sites now and I've noticed that the gallery thumbnails are consistently the same size, whether they are portrait or landscape they are showing in a square box. I'd like mine like that, but I can't see any code when I try looking ! Mine are all over the place http://larcombe-photography.smugmug.com/gallery/839064 as you can see.

Also, while we are at it, how do I get the white box around the main photo as seen in Trish Tuney's site, here http://www.trishtunney.com/gallery/373313

Thanks,
Tony.

To make square thumbnails, you have to set the zoom on the thumbnail to square.

To do this, go to a particular photo and from the gallery tools drop-down pick zoom thumbnail. Then, if you want to make it square, pick 1x1 from the ratio drop-down. You can then drag on the lower right corner of the green box to set which square part of the image you want to show for the thumb. If you just want the thumb for the gallery to be this way, you can just do this one image and set it as the gallery thumbnail. If you want all of them that way, you just have to set all the images in the gallery this way.

This is not a script or CSS magic, it is a Smugmug function :wink

It provides a very easy way to get your thumbnails tidied up to improve the appearance of your site. Well done, Smugmug! Now, I'm thinking, what other stellar features are lurking away, waiting to be discovered?

Love it, works like a charm. Not to be picky but could a function be created for ALL thumbnail photos in a gallery ? I know that some photos would need to be re-arranged because they may not contain a pertinent part of the picture, but that would be much easier than going through 256 photos one by one and doing it !

Just an idea.

Hi Tony, this has been asked before - and while it sounds nice, how would the software know which part of the photo to zoom in on? I think it's pretty darn cool that the feature exists as it is - to take it further will be an engineering project that would go into the queue with other stuff.

Thanks for your suggestion though!

Another great thing about Zooming Thumbnails is that if you have the watermark "PROOF" turned on, it will disable for the thumbnail or category image only. It makes it a lot easier to view the thumbnail, but still offers some protection on the larger images. Plus it lets your viewer see how your images will look after being cropped.

I'm still hoping this will be a feature coming soon where we can turn off the "watermarking" for everything except large images. Until then, this works very well but does require you to go into each image one by one.

Take care all,

Fred

The watermark is generally only on small, medium and large sized pictures, or not?!

I just found out about the zoom thumb feature today (the esteemed Mr Lane had to point it out to me). I would strongly agree with a few others here, a bulk zoom thumb would be a great feature.
:nod

As for which part of the photo... couldn't it be engineered such that you could simply set a ratio (just like in the individual feature), such as 1x1, and then select a corner or just center a square (one that would streth as far as possible from that corner) on the photo? Yeah, for some photos it wouldn't be perfect, but those could be fixed individually if it was really a big deal.

Man oh man this would make smugmug and smugmug small gallery styles look SO much better!

Pretty please? Keep us posted!

Setting the actual zoom on the thumbnail is the easy part. ........... Getting to the feature is what makes the process time-intensive. ........... I see two ways to greatly simplify this. ........... 1. Allow us to move from image to image within the zoom thumbnail screen. Right now it takes you back to the gallery, where you have to select the next picture and pick zoom thumbnail again. Just let us advance to the next image within the zoom thumbnail screen. ........... 2. Show multiple pictures (-S or -Th sized) on one screen and allow us to adjust the zoom box for each picture before advancing to the next set of thumbnails. This way, we could knock them out 10 or 15 at a time.

Is anyone besides me hitting a bug where smumug rejects attemps to zoom a thumbnail to 1x1 size? This only happens for specific galleries in my account (not every gallery). Although smugmug support has confirmed this as a bug, it has received no attention so far. If anyone else is hitting this bug, then I hope I can push up the priority with smugmug to deliver a fix.

Hm - this is the first I'm hearing of this - (FYI - this doesn't mean that the crew isn't aware). I just tried the function (I've not really used it that much before) but I was able to zoom 1x1... what, specifically is happening when you try 1:1 zoom thumbnails? Could I see the gallery in which this is happening? If it's private, send it to help@smugmug.com attn Andy.. thanks.

I prefer not to publicize my galleries. I just emailed the link - check your email.

Hi Greg,

That's certainly a stumper. I was able to download your photos and put in a new gallery and zoom the thumbnails 1x1 just fine. We (JT & I) also tried copying a photo, moving to a new gallery on your site, and zooming thumb to 1x1 - worked fine.

So, something's weird with that gallery, that you linked me via email. Don't really know why - but the simplest thing to do would be to create a new gallery, and move the photos to that new gallery. Then go ahead and zoom the thumbnails to 1x1. I'm sorry that I don't have a better explanation as to why that particular gallery won't allow the 1x1 zooming - but at least we figured out how to fix it for those photos in question.

I should add, if you experience this in any other galleries, please bring it to our attention :) Thanks!

I hope this helps.

All the best,

If it were limited to just one gallery then I wouldn't complain about the workaround, but there are a number of galleries in my account affected by the same bug. I'll email links to some of the other galleries.
