Auto-wide banner!

Okay so I am re-doing my site (alexb-photography.com) and want it to look like this. (http://www.ericholmesphotography.com/) I figured out the slideshow part but can't nail down the wide banner and logo on the left. I EZ Customized the navbar, which I will worry about later.

If anyone can really simply explain how to go about doing this, that would be great.
