I just noticed that when you go to Andy William's Homepage (http://williams.smugmug.com) you see the contents of his custom category called 'Now Showing'. The same galleries can be seen by going to http://williams.smugmug.com/Now%20Showing/.
To Andy (or anyone else who can answer this), how did you configure it to ignore your other categories and show the contents of this category on the main homepage? As far as i can tell, you do have one other Category called 'Info' which contains a gallery with info on how to buy prints.
I'm trying to do something similar on my page. I have categories based on the year that the photo was taken. As it is 2005, ideally I'd like to have the 2005 gallery contents show up by default on the main page. I can't tell if there is a CSS trick to get the homepage to contain the contents of the gallery, or if there is a SmugMug option to do this that I can't seem to find.
Additionally, Andy, how hard is the upkeep of your site when adding new categories / galleries? Are you continually having to tweak the CSS to hide objects that you don't want to show up?
Thanks,
-Paul

"now showing" is a custom category i made, and i put four galleries in that category that i'm featuring. they are my *only* public galleries, also. so natch, they'll show on my moon river photography homepage (www.moonriverphotography.com).
before i paid mike to re-design my site, i made my own navbar and the whole "now showing" thing - it's really a cinch and you can feel free to lift code from my site (use view>source in your browser)
in my redesign, mike did some css that soldiers up the four galleries, but i don't think it's very hard :dunno (mike?)
upkeep? upkeep on my site is a breeze :deal when i want to feature different galleries, i simply change the status to "public" and the category to "now showing" it's a piece of pumpkin cake :food

Ahh, that explains it. I'm pushing 15+ galleries in multiple categories so your solution won't work for me as I had hoped. I wonder how easy it would be for the Smugmug folks to add an option to say 'display this category as the default' so that one category (and subsequent galleries) is displayed on the default homepage.. Either that or an option to redirect the homepage to a category by default.
For an idea as to what I'm trying to do click here. (http://ricci-nash.smugmug.com) The homepage is blank, displaying only a timeline horizontal navbar up top. Ideally I'd like to have the homepage show http://ricci-nash.smugmug.com/2005.
Giving a user to automatically redirect to a specific gallery and/or category would really open up the possibilities, and would almost be as good as letting one drop in their own top level 'index.html' file.
Maybe I can do all of this stuff already; I'm digging Mike's tutorials and am sure that it will have an answer.
Thanks for the quick reply!

Challenging at first (and depending on the number of galleries) challenging to implement correctly on ... surprise surprise ... ie6, but overall not too bad.
