that the sun is starting to rise at a more managable time :D . I shot these over Lake Ontario at about 7:15am.

A question, which is better of the next two. The first is as-shot, the second is cropped in slightly to eliminate the foreground gull and one on the left.

The first one is tops. Absolutely awesome!

On the 2nd one, the cropped version definitely wins.

Beauty. First one's great. These are the kind of shots where I think you have to be very particular about the horizon being level. Keep an eye on that.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. :):

Some of my other shots have the horizon even more tilted. My tripod head doesn't adjust very easily, I think a ball head upgrade might be in the future.

Hi Brett,
I agree about the sunrise time. I'm usually a sunset person except for this time of the year as I too get to see a few.

#1 just knocks my socks off. I think it would look great in print. On my second look, it reminded me of the shots of Bikini Atoll (Nuke test site). As for #2, the cropped one looks better as the foreground bird doesn't add anything and actually takes away from the better framed bird.

Crooked horizons are common for most of us and we just straighten them in PP. Most applications allow a crop and rotate which would level out that horizon.

Thanks for the post,
Chris

I think it peaks at almost 8AM after the winter solstice.

We're not quite in the land of the midnight sun here :):
