No doubt. That last one...is thanks to "red tide". That crap is killing off the wild life over here. Lost at least a dozen dolphins and as many sea turtles on our beaches. :cry Damn yard care products and pest control chemicals. Grrrrrrr. **calling kettle black...damn fire ants too** I'm not sure if this problem will ever vanish. :dunno :scratch Too many nutrients/chemicals in our waters. Grrrrrr

Guys,
Can you give us any tips on how to 'bring to life' the reflections in post?

Great reflections, Birdman and Harry!
You all know I am mostly shooting in green water, algae. And not many birds at the ocean, plus I need to find me a phone to shoot, and I have posted most reflection shots with birds. Oh, me, oh my!
You two done good!

Guys,
Can you give us any tips on how to 'bring to life' the reflections in post?
Hey Nir,
For the color shots I did minimal post work, the IR shot of course needed significant post work.
The key for me in a reflection shot is just to nail the exposure to within a third of a stop. If there is a significant exposure difference between the subject
and the reflection I might convert two versions of the shot from RAW, one for the highlights and one for the shadows and then copy one to use as a layer mask on the other.
Thank you! I never tried 2 exposures of the raw, one for the reflection :scratch such a simple but brilliant idea...

Thanks Ginger. I'm going to have to learn a heck of a lot more about PP/PS. I'm familiar with the technique you describe, Harry. I"ve never used it yet. I'm still using the wonderful "dodge" and "burn" tool. :huh :D Sometimes I'll "tweak" the reflection...if need be. The real key is to find a nice clean mirror that will fit the format of your shot. :uhoh :rofl
I suppose "reflect/reflection" is an interpretation of sorts (the word). This bird is reflecting about it's next meal.....I believe. :dunno

Groovy man and thanks Harry. I appreciate the comment. It was a very strange day for lighting...and just in general. I've never seen our beach so empty. No people..no birds...and a T-storm rolling in from the East coast...very sureal. It was not the best lighting for the "usual" shots..but did offer up an interesting look at the bird. He was backlighted..and wasn't really sure how much to underexpose the dark brown bird. Sort of have my egrets dialed in now..but this is the first waiding bird (sandpiper?) that I've captured.

Yeah, I have been thinking the same thing..................
And you started, Harry, if one of you isn't better after a shoot the other one is.
no reason for some of us to shoot anymore, whine, whine, whine, as nauseum....
However, you know this guy with 4Labs, he used this great technique with an
annoying cell phone.
So, you all have done so much else, hehe, I hate to suggest this, it pains me,
but in the interest of ME, uh, could you guys, uh, run over all Nikon equipment.
We can all carry Point and shoots, same brand, make size features, or DSLRs, same deal, but not what we are used to something different, like the camera Andy just sold. So then we would all be on the same level. Not the equipment, just the photographer and the shootoff to beat all............
now that is a challenge, :clap :beatwax :duel :bad :bash :rambo :flash :D

Not the equipment, just the photographer and the shootoff to beat all............
now that is a challenge, http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/boxe.gif http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/duel.gif http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/blbl.gif http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/baldy.gif http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/2ar15smilie.gif http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/9496500-Ti.gif http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/icon10.gifGinger,
Its never about the equipment. Heck we all know that our poor ole Nikons can't compete with all these shiny new Canons. http://dgrin.com/images/smilies/bs.gif

I have been meaning to post this. The raptor, osprey, overlooking the shoulders of the egrets. When I posted it before I had CUT the heads off in the reflection thereby eliciting outcrys of protest, so I did the whole frame. This seems as good a place as any, since the problem was in the reflections. Sorry no silhouettes that I know of.

Birdman, Ilike your tri colored umbrella can, I am so tired of the very small tri colored herons that seem to be just about the only bird in this area anymore. Except the egrets. I don't think egrets ever totally go away!
I am missing my camera-can. I think it is going BY GROUND to Canon for repairs!

It is supposed to be an American Oystercatcher! As a coincidence, I was excited to catch this other American Oystercatcher on the same day! Same place, too, but one was to my right and the other one to my left.
They are indigeneous to Charleston: the local winter bird (s)! I did not know that they made a real bird just for us, too. And notice, they both have reflections! ginger

Thanks Ginger. They are recent. Still working on an idea. I had "the shot" yesterday. Unfortunately I didn't have my DSLR and had grabbed my parents cheapo P&S. I got a pic..but it's too blurry to take seriously. Slow shutter release, poor lighting (dusk) high ISO and small sensor made for a pretty noisy image. It was an interesting shot of a snowy egret's reflection. He was in flight...ahh what the heck. Here's the one that got away.
This will probably be headed for the trash can soon. :cry
