I know Smug Mug uses YouSendIt.com for the transfer of large files.

I will soon need to send a couple of large video files to a friend - is the above the best way to do this?

Does the recipient need to also have an account, does anyone know?

You Send It is 9.99/mo for an individual account, are there any good Free transfer services that anyone knows about?

Could always go with a FTP Client like - FireFTP or FileZilla FTP both a plug in for the Mozilla Browser - FireFox......

Why, when dropbox.com is so dead-simple easy and free? Oh and full of awesome-sauce, too. I couldn't live without it.

Another +1 on Dropbox.

It's very simple to use. Go to the dropbox.com site and install it. Create a folder, put your files in it, then invite your friend. The email they get will walk them through Dropbox install and your files will just appear on their machine.

If you have any problems setting up a folder or sharing it with your friend just post back here. There are bunches of people here who can walk you through it.

Yeah. Download an FTP server program and get it up and running on your PC, including setting up port forwarding on your router. Then, get the person you want to share the file with to download an FTP client. Set up a username and password for them on your end. Make sure they type in the server name, user name, and password correctly. Set their home directory to the right place and make sure you save the file in the right place.

That's really worth avoiding the $50/year dropbox charges if 2GB of space isn't enough for you.

Another vote for dropbox. Upload and send a link. Easy as pie.

So, I'm sending a friend ten video files via Dropbox.

I sent him links to the files - where does he access them?

When I click on the links in my e-mail I sent him, the files open in Windows Media Player and are useless garbage - all pixelated (but they play fine for mefrom the original files in ZB) - will he be able to copy these files onto his Mac for editing?

(we're working on a video together)

PS - I don't see anything particularly easy about DropBox.

I dropped the files into my folder, clicked on Share, they turned up as links to copy, but when I go into my DropBox folder, only one file shows up there. Maybe they're uploading?

Once DropBox is set up it's easy and really powerful. But for sending stuff occasionally it's definitely not the easiest.

Whatever you put in your DropBox should be exactly what he gets when he downloads, so the pixellation is a bit confusing.

You can check whether they're uploading or uploaded by the status of the icon of each on your system (at least on Mac). There's a green checkmark when the file is fully uploaded, a red X when they're not.

However - there was only one file in my sharing folder, so i have no idea what those links were connected to.

I am now attemptint to upload the rest of the files but I'm finding it quite cumbersome.

As far as I know, I did eveything properly. I dragged and dropped the folder of files into DropBox, but only two files are showing when I go to my folder at Drop Box.

Okay, I don't know what to say.

I've read the instructions - it says,

1. log in
2. click the upload button
3. choose files
4. choose as may files as you like
5. click the start upload button

Except, when I do this and choose all my files, it says, "sorry, 300mb limit, but you can download more with the desktop application."

I have no idea how to access this.
Or maybe I already have - are those (some of which have the green check mark) downloading?

If they're in your Dropbox folder, but they are not fully uploaded, all of the files will be accessible to you, but only the ones that have uploaded so far will be visible to people you are sharing with.

The uploader only takes up to 300mb, the instructions are to simply drop more than 300mb into your dropbox folder.

What next? How do I upload them?

If you've placed the files in your Dropbox folder (by dragging and dropping them into the folder, for example), then they are synching with Dropbox's servers. The ones that have the little green checkmark are synched, and should be available remotely. The ones that are marked blue with a rotating arrow are still synching, and are still only available to you but will be available remotely once they change from blue to green.

EDIT: Placing a file in your Dropbox folder automatically starts the upload process. All files in the Dropbox folder will automatically upload their changes whenever they are changed, and new files will automatically upload once you place them there.

Okay - that's the missing link. Thank you. They are apparently uploading, and I gather that when they are done, the links I sent to my friend will connect him to them.

Thank God. It would have been quicker, I think, if I had swum across the Charles River with the CF cards in my teeth. : - )

Stupid me, I thought 2GB limit meant "won't transfer a file larger than 2gigs. ha ha.

So, half my files have been sent (approx 2 GB), with the little blue symbol on the rest, with a notice that my drop box is full and I need to upgrade.

Ha ha, think I'll take that swim now.
PS = Anybody know of a computer de-tox clinic? I'm ready.

Skydrive http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive , a Microsoft free offering, has a limit of 25G. I've found it not as convienient as dropbox and more of an effort to set up.

However if your friend downloads the 2G you have in dropbox now, then let's you know, you can delete those files and dropbox will upload 2G more.

But, ya' know, especially a this time a year, a quick swim across the Charles might be refreshing, at least you won't be dodging the regatta:D

Deleting and re-adding sounds intelligent - great idea - but at least one of the remaining files is 2.22gigs. I checked the Sky-thingie, and while they do have that 25 gig limit, the largest file you can load at a time is very small.
