So we're in the middle of Kanab on our way east and my wife has the brilliant idea of stopping in at the BLM office to check on wave permits. I wouldn't have even considered it since we were nowhere near early enough for the lottery but it turns out they had open permits for the next three days. We happily changed our Saturday hike plans and enjoyed a glorious day at Coyote Buttes. Spent the whole day in a short sleeve shirt and could've worn shorts if I'd been brave enough to pack them. I felt bad for everyone stuck in the deep freeze on the east coast. </DIV'>

That's what I would call a happy accident! The 1st & 3rd are awesome!

All outstanding, but #1 is the winner. Wonderfully done.

Can't add to that. :D

Wow oh Wow...is what I said when I opened this page ! Especially #1...my eyes followed the lines up almost making me dizzy. These are beautiful.

I echo the "WOW". If that first one doesn't find its way onto the wall, you are doing it a disservice!

Spectacular. I like them all, but I think I like the composition and especially the color on #1.

that's one heck of an "accident"! excellent shots, too! i've wanted to see the Wave in person, but i've only been down that way once, and didn't have time to wait for the permit thing. next time, though, by golly... at least, as long as i can get there before i get too old an' gimpy to make it! :(

Beautiful shots! You captured some phenomenal light as well.

You are also extremely lucky! When I went in early November there hadn't been much of any wind for over a week and there was a big pile of sand built up right in the middle of your first shot.

Wow very well done. Beautiful shots. Glad you got lucky with the permits. How long of a hike was this time wise?

Thanks again everybody. It sure was fun shooting these. They were from Jan. 22 and yes, we got lucky with the conditions. They are often very nice in the winter though, which is why I just love hiking in the desert in the winter months. On a good day the light can still be pretty warm most of the day and the sky very colorful, whereas high sun and heat washes everything out quite often in the summer, even at sunrise and sunset to a point. And as we just found out, permits are easier to get.

Doug, the trail guide says it's 3 miles one way but it sure seems like a short 3 miles. And time wise, it took all day because we just couldn't leave. There's lots of fun rock to be wandered around in, in addition to the most photographed areas. When we did finally leave we bushwhacked around and explored some of the side canyons to the west, and didn't pick up the trail until the last 3/4 of a mile or so to the car.

There were shadows to deal with, they started creeping in before noon, so unless you go on a warm overcast day I'd think mid morning is the best time to be shadow free. That's just right now though, it'll be earlier as the days get longer. Or wait until later in the day when it's all in shade. I couldn't really decide how it was going to look then, maybe someone that's been there in the evening can help out.
