Those are some great shots given the relatively low shutter speed you were using. Any for sale?
Also, why were West and Mild Seven allowed to advertise on the car, but Marlboro was not?

Those are all terrific! Just the right amount of blur, and the cars are sharp. Great tracking ability and anticipation, mcz.
Merc, maybe it's because West and Mild Seven aren't for sale in the US? :dunno

Thank you...
The reason for the lack of advertising on the Ferrari vs other cars is because the tobacco laws only allow one race over the duration of the weekend to promote a brand, also, West and Mild Seven are not sold here in the US but in Europe...

I was looking through your sites, mcz, and saw the shot of the Renault from last year's USGP, its brake rotors glowing. Very cool! Do you shoot full manual, or shutter priority to control the exposure time? Beautiful work.

Both. It really depends on a number of factors. Light being the main factor and placement of the posts vs me.
Last year, the race was later in the year and thus it was cooler in the mornings and a little overcast and the brake glow really lit up...
If I shoot all manual then it's gonna be zone focussed, although I have refined the art of not using the machine gun mode (I was going to say motor drive but there isn't one of sorts huh?).
The trouble with AF is the post. With the 1D you can set the AF sensitivity accordingly (so the tracking isn't upset by foreground objects).
With this hot taken this year, the air was "really thick" and humid and thus altered the colours and put a smoggy look into the imagery:

Oh, please do post some more, they're wonderful! And thanks for the explanation. In what way do the support posts affect your decision to go manual versus shutter priority? (I understood the bit about the fence posts throwing off the autofocus, but not the manual/shutter priority decision.)

How close I may be to them, how far they are apart and the length of before and after of the track (the path of the subject) and how much light.
I also use manual to keep my hand in....!

MacZ, if you take requests, please shoot a pic of my countryman Fernando Alonso winning the race... :D
That's him in the second pic you posted, the one titled "renault". Spanish flag in the helmet.
Awesome pics. I'm a pro myself, but I suck at motorsports. Lack of practice, no tracks anywhere close to me. :wxwax

That's great to hear, especially since F1 drivers don't have the best reputations, of late.

Looks tough this year. Seems to be Schumacher's best year ever.
If you guys are into racing, check out SPEED Channel this weekend. The SPEED Touring Car Championship is on Sunday at noon and again at 6PM (Eastern.) We have a double header at Sears Point. The 6PM race is going to be live, second time ever for a World Challenge race. We run three BMW 325's. Cars #1, 2 & 3. Turner Motorsport is the team name.
Here are some of my photos from our race shop:
http://dugmar.smugmug.com/gallery/79230
And on track: (Lime Rock Park)
http://dugmar.smugmug.com/gallery/130038
I hope to get to a few more races this year. I used to travel with the team for 5 seasons, now I keep the sales department running when they go racing. I prefer it actually as my hearing had suffered from so many tack days. Plus I hate cramming myself into a coach airline seat. :)
Enjoy!

I'm glad to see my buddy Andrew wandered over to dgrin at last.
Wait till he posts his SURFER shots! Though we know each other from the equine side, both going for the equine essence rather than formula, he has quite the catalog of surf action.
Andrew, start a new thread!
