Early morning on the beach

Appreciate some comments on these shots- still trying to learn to take something other than macro shots. Shot with my 200mmcanon f2.8 with 1.4x extender except pic#4 shot with 300D kit lens (18-55). I'm amazed at the different light colour shooting into the sun and away from the sun. I was shooting in TV mode with 1/400th sec shutter speed- noticed many of the shots the aperture was around f20- would I have been better off shooting in AV mode with say f11?

I like these LV they have a nice warm lazy feel, but would you be better off in AV? I would say so, just till you get more of a hang on different situations...When I started I started on P and tokk notes of what the camera was doing and then changing things to my liking. Now I usually stick to AV mode simply because I find it so hard to get the right seed, but the right aperture is easy to decide on. f20 seems very narrow really, f11 and a faster speed would have been more practical one would think....but then...I'm no expert:scratch

Sunset is a great time of day to play with light, it can make ordinary things look so much more dramatic, and yes, so much colour variation. My best advice is keep shooting, and take notes (wait, EXIF info does that for you:rolleyesim still in film mode) and you will eventually find what works for you and what doesnt. If you take 50 shots and get 5 good ones then hey, you got 5 good ones:D

There is the concern about diffraction limited changes on resolution at very small aperatures like f20 versus f11 - but this may be more significant with smaller diameter lens elements.. Your DOF would be less as you know.

I originally thought I was going to shoot some wading birds and thought poor light etc so I set the camera to what I considered the slowest speed for handholding. In the event there were no birds that I was going to get near and I decided just to look around at the scenery, but I have a dreadful habit when shooting of taking no notice of the info in the viewfinder and didn't realise most of the shots were coming out at f20 but as sharpness was not really what the shots were about, not certain how much diff there will be shooting at F11 in AV- anyway tomorrow morning I'll be out again I expect.
