I was wondering people's opinion of this shot. To me it is very emotional. But then again, I know these people. My sister, her husband, and her two month old daughter. In this shot you never really see anyone all that well, but I think the composition is what is powerful about it.

Anyone agree? Or do I like it only because these are blood relatives of mine? TIA for opinions on what is good and bad about the shot. It helps with the learning.

I think you have raised the 64 dollar question. For you the image is very powerfull for your personal reasons. For somebody else it may say nothing. I spent some time talking to the "wedding photographer" photographing the one I attended this weekend and we had this very discussion - what makes a good picture?

Here it comes, my $0.02 worth!

I think it is a good photo. I like it. Something about it makes me want to look at the details. For me that makes it good. If I knew the people, it would most likely be better. But I like it.

Now, for the part of photography and maybe art that I am just now coming to grips with. In my opinion, it does not matter if the image is a "good" one. For me, I have to have a reaction of some type for it to be "good." There was a discussion in another thread concerning the works of some very famous photographers with some images taken by them. You know what? I like your image better than some of the "good" pictures taken by those guys.

I really don'rt know what is suppose to be "good" photograpy, but I am starting to develop an opinion as to what causes me to react to an image. At this point, that is what makes a "good" or "great" photo to me.

I love this photo. The hand reaching in to straighten the little hat. The father holding the baby gently & looking down with pure love. This is an emotional shot weather your blood relative, or some stranger with a keyboard.

I love the photo as well. It simply pulls me in, and is very evocative. Simple, to the point, yet speaks those thousand words of lore, yes?

Thanks for all the feedback on what is nice about that photo. Helps when taking new photos to know what others like. I believe I need to "copyright this image now :) and possibly shop it around stock photography agencies. :)
