http://www.schmootography.com/Landscapes/Cityscapes/fog-cityb/688554170_YXYbN-S-2.jpg Clear your schedules and grab your 'pods! It's been too long since any significant number of NorCal Dgrinners have stood in the same spot at the same time, and that needs to change.

How about a little meeting, greeting and grubbin'? We're thinking Saturday, October 2nd, meeting in the late afternoon to do a little street shooting, walking along the Embarcadero and seeing how the sunset pans out. If the weather sucks, we can duck into the Ferry Building, get something to eat and maybe try some night shots after the sun sets at 7 PM.

With tons of people, buildings, merchants, bridges, boats and the Bay, there'll surely be a little something for everyone.

More details to be posted as we firm things up. It'll be so awesome to meet all the local Bay Area peeps... as well as any visiting Dgrinners who may be in town!

All in favor, say aye. :ear

And then after that, drive 4 hours to Yosemite for some night shots, take a 1 hour nap in the car (optional!) and shoot sunrise?

Wish I could join you, but I'll probably be fighting bears in the North Cascades (they want to eat the huckleberry, I want to photograph it!).

I've said this before, but that is a fantastic shot - the fog and colors are wonderful.

Oct 2, 20107:06 AM6:51 PMSunset is at 6:51pm
Moon will set at 3:36pm so it won't be around.
The only place we will be able to see the actual sunset will be up by pier 39. Do you have an idea on where we will start/finish?

It sounds like it's going to be awesome! :barb I don't actually know if Andy's planning on being on the west coast at that time, but he's helping get the word out around there. I know there are tons of Dgrinners in this area that are probably still in the woodwork, so it sure doesn't hurt to get the message out.

Thanks, mate, and that's a spanking good idea! Schmavis is up for it, but don't know if anyone else is. :lol3

Hey don't forget your bear bells. If you get mistaken for a huckleberry, there are a lot of Milky Way shooters that will be very very sad.

Hey Ben! I had no idea you were a CA Dgrinner, since Glacier was long before I moved out here. It would be great to see you out. :thumb

The original discussion involved meeting at 4-ish, walking by that big statue with the bow, shooting around Pier 7 and food, but let's defer to April for more specific suggestions such as where to park if you're driving in.

Have you cleaned off the dust off your camera? Ready to put that glass to good use? Remember where you put your ‘pod? It’s time to go shooting! Dgrin style! :click

Starting Point: 4 pm Rincoln Park, Base of the Cupid's Span at Folsom St and Embarcadero, San Francisco, CA. If you can’t arrive on time, just wander. We’ll be the folks with the cameras :D
http://photos.apriltse.com/photos/1023209661_aQWqS-XL.jpg

Wanderlust: Wandering is the key word…. These are some of the places we’ll hit
1) Ferry Building.. some info here (http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/)
2) Pier 7: Awesome angles in light and in darkness here (http://www.pierfishing.com/pier_of_the_month/9810.html)
3) Justin Herman Plaza – lots of stuff depending on what’s going on -- some google image search of the area (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&expIds=17259,26262,26751&sugexp=ldymls&tok=KUNnHZRrFUJze5hCNp9ubA&xhr=t&q=justin+herman+plaza&cp=10&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=univ&ei=ScefTP_gEojCsAPu5szVAQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=5&sqi=2&ved=0CEgQsAQwBA&biw=2400&bih=1259)

We’ll grab a bit to eat at Gott's Roadside (http://gottsroadside.com/) (:eat) on the water's edge of Ferry Building. Afterward, if you want some more, we can shoot long exposure night shots because the lights are just beautiful in the area.

Weather: It’s look like a clear afternoon/night. Temps should be between 60°-70°. It’s always best to wear layers. Save those five inch heels and dress shoes for another day; Saturday afternoon/evening is designed for comfy shoes!

Sunset: 6:51 pm @265.8°; ° Moon’s disc is 40.8% illuminated

Some angles to consider...
From Pier 7:
http://photos.apriltse.com/photos/1023215876_Wc28Z-M.jpg

From Rincoln Park
http://photos.apriltse.com/photos/1023216432_pqhsU-M.jpg

Getting here: The best thing about getting to San Francisco – there are MANY options!
1) Public Transportation:
-Bart: Red, Yellow, Blue or Green line: Embarcadero Stop
http://photos.apriltse.com/photos/1023148408_pJPtj-L.gif

-Muni bus, underground Muni, ferry, cable car or the F-Line streetcar: Lots of option
http://photos.apriltse.com/photos/1023170745_suVtb-L.jpg

2) Driving(more like where to park: Note – parking isn’t cheap in the city). These are just some of the parking lots in the vicinity of the Ferry Building
-San Francisco Parking Inc, 75 Broadway, SF 94111
-Golden Gateay Garage, 250 Clay Street, San Francisco, CA 94111
-Embarcadero Center, Embarcadero Four is closest of the four centers

What to bring: Yourself (most important), some glass, a ‘pod, remotes and filters if you have them. And anything else you want to dust off and use again…

Got Questions? Post them here…

See you on Saturday! :wave

Still totally bummed I'm going to miss this one after I finally moved out here due to being out of town (aka out of state in Atlanta, GA) for a conference, can't wait to see everyone's photos and definitely look forward to attending the next one! Sunset keeps getting earlier and earlier... I did an engagement shoot in San Francisco last weekend and sunset was just after 7.... already 10 minutes earlier only a week later, crazy!

Just a heads up!

The Giants are playing the Padres at 1:10 pm that Saturday afternoon on 10/2.

At 4pm, the game should be still going on, but expect the parking lots to be filled in the area and a ton of people in the embarcadero area.

The Giants are in the thick of the pennant race. Expect a zillion people in the area --- expect a zillion happy people especially if they win the game on Saturday. They need to win two games from now until the end of the season to make the playoffs (they're in battle with Padres for the spot).

Actually, it might make for some interesting street photos :wink

It was really great to meet everyone! Cristie and I had a blast just shooting random things. Definitely a new experience for us. We are both exhausted since we were walking and shooting since 10am, but the sore feet and sore neck will heal. Downloading tonight, uploading tomorrow. BTW, getting a lensbaby for sure! That shot was awesome!

PS: Watch out for dive-bombing seagulls! That was unreal!

The best part is seeing how each of us sees the same subject in different ways. And talking about gear. And the OMG-nerdy photographer jokes! :lol3

I really do hope that it isn't just an annual thing, because I'd do it again in any of a million great locations in the Bay Area.

Next time this happens, it might be fun for each of us to review a couple of different people's portfolios ahead of time and come shoot-day try to knock-off each other's styles. Not as a competition with the original photographer so much as a homage.

It was good to find out that I suck at "Street" photography! LOL

If you suck at street photography that must mean that I'm not even on the scale. :bow

Had a fab time - great getting to meet everyone and it is so fun to see what everyone else came up with and to see different POVs.

I'm definitely in for any future SF meetups!

Now to see if I can remember how to post photos..

Ah, but it is never too late! :D I am just now kicking myself for finding a setting on my camera for noise reduction for long exposures... I suppose that gives me a valid excuse to have to come down and shoot again! :clap Either that or go Canon. :wink

It was just amazing to see everyone and just reinforces my belief that dgrin is the best photography community. Between insanity at work and the thought of running a half marathon the very next without enough training, my brain was somewhere else other than photography.

I made a list, checked it twice, charged up my batteries, packed two cameras, baked some cookies (very important for a photo walk!) and made my way to Bart.

I realized I forgot one key thing while waiting at the bart station. I learned that a camera doesn’t work too well without a battery. :huh Oops. I made the list, checked it twice, but left the battery in the charger! I knew that even without a battery, the evening would be a success since I was shooting with other people. Plus, I can always make a camera phone rock! And an IR-body isn’t too shabby either!

I might have forgotten my battery, but I did bring one thing with me. San Francisco turned into one big softbox before the sunset.

I call the first few frames my “before I borrowed a 1d battery” period

Cal - love what you did with the "G" - knew it had potential but it just wasn't working for me... and the guy eating is CLASSIC! He is staring right into the camera, but he really had no idea you were taking a picture of him! April, love the phone things and CONGRATS on the half marathon!

Why not someplace else? Maybe the coast--Big Sur, Hearst Castle, Santa Cruz, etc.

I can suggest a photo walk from Palace of Fine Arts (the dome building that the Exploratorium is in) down the beach/road to Ft. Point. Great photo opportunities the entire way, provided it's not raining.

Also: Alameda has a base and docks that are good subjects. Plus if executed correctly this can be combined with a free tour of the very photogenic St. George Spirits (1:00PM weekends) facility.

I'm up for driving just about anywhere any weekend (because it's day 279 of 365 and I'm flat out of ideas) but SF seems central for the broadest group (not necessarily just those of us still in this thread). Both of those dates are good for me.

Cal - love what you did with the "G"

I hear that a lot. No, wait... It's a pet project of mine to figure out how to shoot neon so I do it every chance I get. The G was getting a lot of love because we were trying to figure out if it was saturating the red channel of our cameras. Turns out, not so much, but the screen on the camera was lying.

Howdy All-

I am going to be in SF the weekend of the 30th and 31st. I actually get in on the 27th and have vacation until the 4th of November. So any chance, please, of having it on Saturday the 30th or Sunday the 31st? I can't quite organize it from a few hundred miles but figure I can ask. So any chance?

It doesn't have to be SF proper, I am renting a car (motorcycles were too expensive) so I can get around.

Haha, I love how another walkabout is already being planned! This is awesome! And if you guys want to do something up my way, I wont mind :) (I guess I'd better keep my eyes open for something that would be a good excuse to do something up here...)

But really, just doing something, even that far away was sweet, it felt great to get out, and use my camera, it has been sitting around far too much.

Plus, I had a blast at work printing some of the photos from the trip, I made some 4x6's, they felt wayyy to small, so, I made a 4x10, and a 6x15 of one of my photos, still felt too small, but much more satisfying. So now I have an 8x15(It's the largest we can print in our lab) It felt goooood... (although I still have a really strong itching to make it larger, plus I still need to find a frame)

So... Let's do something again! I'll try to think of some ideas! :)
