It's all experimentation and simulation. I have had 6 months to plan and prepare since I took my first time lapse photo of the moon in December. The first one was planned out on paper 12/30/2001:

You will note the arc of the moons path differed from what I thought would happen on paper.

This latest one was planned out on the computer!

You will note the strong similarity between the simulation and the actual photo as shot. That is what 6 months of planning can do ;-)
