Here are a few from this Fridays game. I scored a sideline pass. I haven't shot Football since my highschool yearbook staff days. Comments/Critiques welcome.

G'day Thomas,

I know next to nothing about this game but i do like the shots. I'm not qualified enough to critique shots, but my comment would be that I look forward to seeing more shots as the season unfolds.

Cheers

Hope the fellow in still walking straight ... I'm sure ankles aren't supposed to bend like that :uhoh looks painful.

I dunno nought about gridiron neither, great clear captures though.

Very nicely composed, and good clarity.

Care to share what equipment & settings you were using? I just started shooting football, this past Friday (http://miltonsports.smugmug.com/gallery/763308/1/33718559) was the second game of the High School season, and I'm definatly not happy with my results yet. I know I need to get a good off-board flash (asked for a Sigma EF500DG for my birthday next week) but then there's lots of practice and learning yet to do as well.

-sTevenThese were taken with a 1DMII, 70-200 2.8 on board. ISO 1250-1600, Av mode at 2.8. Shutter speeds from 1/320th to 1/500 usually. I did some at f/4 with the 1.4TC at 1600-3200. I did have a 580EX also, set to -1 1/3 FEC. A good starting point seems to be ISO 1250, 1/320th at 2.8. Any slower shutter speeds tends to get into some pretty bad motion blur. I also used AI servo with the center focus point only active. I ran these through Noise ninja as well. Hope this helps.

Here is one that is has a little motion blur. f/4 1/250 ISO 1600 FL 280 (1.4TC)

I like them. Nice composition, nice timing, you can see faces, etc. I'm jealous of the nice lighting you have available there. That is the hardest part of high school football is the terrible lighting. I try to shoot ISO 1600 in manual at f/2.8 and 1/500 but my images aren't as bright as yours. Will be trying a flash next as well.

Yes the lighting is very good for HS football. They are pretty serious about football around here. New stadium, new artificial turf etc. Too bad the teachers have to beg for school supplies, priorities....

Valdosta High School Wildcats. The turf looks similar, almost looks like real grass. Nice to walk on, I'm not sure how it feels to fall on. Seems much improved compared to the old astro turf though.
