Thanks for the tips, here are a few shots from tonight's commercial food shoot.

I took alot of the advice given here when i asked about shooting food. I made sure i brought a thing of veggie oil and small paint brush to apply it to the meet. This was my first time doing a paid commercial food shoot. How do these 2 look? I have a lot more pictures to go through but i wanted to post a few up to start.

Hmmm, looks good enough to eat :)

Stray piece of food on the front of the plate in the first shot and two sauces meeting ? Butter from the asperagus ?

Specular highlights are a bit much on the meat on both shots. Too much oil :) Or not enough diffusion...

Like the angle of the second shot best.

Kinda feel the meat is a bit too charred, grill marks would look better.

yup..the specular highlights are killing it. the rest of it is very nice though! great color, dof, exposure,etc

I like the 2nd image better too. It conveys what's all on the plate, better.
Agree about the specular highlights.
I'd also want to kill the dark BG spots in the upper frame (center and left).

Thanks for all the comments guys, this was my first time shooting food. Food is a whole different ball game haha. I think i will invest in some decent strobes and a pocket wizard if i get more into commercial type photography. I like hearing all the critique because i need it to get better. On the bright side the client LOVED the pictures. I did them for a beef company like i mentioned, the beef company had a higher end restaurant cook the dishes for me to shoot. Well the restaurant liked my pictures so much they want to use me for their website to shoot food for it. I thought that was pretty cool, oh and besides getting paid for the shoot when i finished they sent me home with a huge prime rib for free haha.

Here are a couple more pictures from the shoot. The quality may not be as good as because they are hosted from my facebook i have not had a chance to load them up to flickr yet.

A local company that developes websites is doing a huge project for a beef company. My brother is one of the "partners" in the website design company, they needed a photographer and started looking into local photographers. My brother wanted to give me a crack at it, so he had me put some sample pictures to show his partners. All of the partners had to agree on the photographer, so it was me and some other photographers they had found locally. They chose my work over the other guys and after they picked me they also discovered my price was less than 1/4th the cost of the other commercial photographers haha.
