View Full Version : Standard accounts and StatCounter

Has anyone figured out a way to put StatCounter code into the home page on a standard account? I got it to work in the gallery pages, but putting it into the bio did not work.

Mostly, StatCounter has confirmed what I already suspected: my mother is the most frequent visitor :D. But I have seen visitors from surprising places, and without tracing on my home page, I have no idea of how they got to my site. The referring page on the galleries is almost always my home page. Since I am nowhere near the bandwidth limit and am saving for some new gear, I would prefer not to upgrade my account for now.

Thanks.

I started the same way you did, but then upgraded to power user as I heard of the upcoming price rises. I don't regret it - even though I haven't figured out all the customization stuff, but I'm planning to enhance my knowledge in this direction.

What you got so far is the best you can get as far as I know.

Sebastian Thanks, Sebastian. I suppose I'll just have to upgrade if I want to find out how that guy from Korea got to my homepage. Actually the main reason I have been resisting is that I'm afraid I'll end up spending too much time futzing around with customization and not enough time shooting pics.

Cheers.

Yeah that could be a problem. I haven't spent much on it yet. Just putting in the counter and my email-address, but I more will follow. :wink

Have fun,
Sebastian

Have fun,
Sebastian Right. I just upgraded and put the StatCounter code in the header. Works great. Now I'll just have to figure out how to change that ugly green font color that they came up with, and then...:rofl

Moral of the story: be careful what you wish for.

Moral of the story: be careful what you wish for. I've placed the Statcounter code into the header as well and it works fine. I am a power user and I don't know if it is possible with a regular account.

When you mention the "green font color" is that for the counter from Statcounter? If it is then maybe you could do what I did and select "none" in the settings for the counter and you can't see a thing.

To get to the stats just have a link in your browser that points to the "summary" page (the bar chart).

When I press on "Recent pageload activity" I can see the country people have come from and the path they have taken. Some have come through Google and others through the Smugmug galleries.

http://ponyfizz.smugmug.com Hi Tony,

The green I was complaining about doesn't come from StatCounter but from Smugmug. I use an invisible counter in the header just like you do. What I am unhappy about is the green color of some of the labels in my galleries, like comments: or original size. I didn't see any specific reference to that in the Smugmug tutorial on customization, so I guess I'll have to slog through their stylesheet and see if I can figure out how to tweak it myself.

StatCounter works OK, though I am a little disappointed that what they call a visitor, I would call a pageload. The logs can rollover pretty quickly.

Hi Richard :)

This thread might help you out. There are several others (although of course I don't remember which ones right now - figures ...).

Changing the green (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=16765) Thanks, Barb. I already figured out that .title { color: #xxxxxx } was what I needed. No more green for me :clap:clap.

Cheers.

How do I put a stat counter in?

How do I put a stat counter in? First, you have to open an account with S (http://www.statcounter.com)tatCounter (http://www.statcounter.com) . You can get an account for free. It has no time limit, but collects only a limited amount of data. I suggest you try the free account to determine whether the information it provides is valuable enough to upgrade to a paid service.

Once you have your account, you download a small snippet of Javascript code from the StatCounter site. You paste this code into your custom header and that's all there is to it. You can then look at the activity of your Smugmug account in a number of different ways by logging into your account on the StatCounter site.

If you don't have a pro or power user account on Smugmug, you can paste the code into each gallery description. This is a bit tricky because it affects the display of your descriptions on your home page. You will have to do it for every gallery you want to track. There does not seem to be a way to put the code on the home page of a standard account.

Hope this helps. PM me if you need further clarification.

Cheers,

thanks for the quick reply rsinmadrid. I am a poweruser and was wondering. I am not real sure I need it though. Nowhere near my limit. And mainly only faily goes there although I am looking to get more professional with this.
