Worldwide Photo Walk

I just signed up for one of the walks in Boston. I have no idea what to expect. Has anyone done one of these before? It seems like fun. I'm not sure what to bring, other than a couple of lenses and spare batteries. I should probably tote my tripod (even though it sucks), but I'm just not sure how these events run, if there's a lot of walking and not much time to set up shots, or if it's more leisurely than that. Any words of wisdom?

I've done two years in a row in Worcester through the Worcester Photography Meetup.

Yes a couple lenses and tripod (mono at least). Plenty of storage and bateries.

And be ready for anything!

Thanks, Don. I thought about joining the Worcester walk, as it is closer to me than Boston (the .in.boston part of my name isn't really true :D ). But I think I would like the views of the Harbor and Boston skyline a little more. Maybe next year I'll try Worcester. I wish I had the funds to upgrade my tripod in the next few weeks. I guess the only good thing my 'pod has going for me is that it's really really light. That's good for a walk, unless of course there's the slightest breeze. :rofl

The one I did started out as a big group that spread out and dissipated as people spent the time they wanted to spend on each shot, and people will get interested in different types of subjects on the same block. It's a free-for-all, nobody should be telling you to shoot this or that or to hurry up or whatever. The run-and-gun handheld street shooters will naturally separate from the tripod and macro people, etc. Your group may plan to meet at a specific place at the end where the group comes together again and you can compare LCDs and have drinks.

Yeah, I forgot that part, colourbox. Shoot at your own pace . If you spot someone doing similar shots,maybe hang together, loosely. Typically the plan is for much of the total group to meet someplace and share and the end of a designated time. Often about 3- 4 hrs.

Hello all,
I remember reading through here last year right when I started photography and finding out about Scott Kelby's photowalk, and I was able to locate something in Long Island City Queens (different from Long Island).
I dont' remember how I found this place, or how I can find a group near me.

Any suggestions?

The walk is worldwide and scheduled for July 24th 2010.

The WWPW on Saturday was a lot of fun! It was my first time doing anything of the sort, and it was a blast to meet up with so many other like-minded folk. I couldn't tell you how many times a passerby asked what was going on. We usually said we were waiting for celebrities to come by or something. We wondered if any police/guards would give us a hard time (there were a few Federal buildings near/on our route), but there were no such issues.

I was able to use my new tripod/ballhead for the event, and what a huge difference that made! It was a pleasure to shoot with that rather than my old rickety plastic deal. Very fun.

Unfortunately the weather was very hazy, so we didn't have a lot of great views of the Boston skyline from across the harbor. Looking through the photos I took, there aren't any that will be hanging on my wall anytime soon, but it was still a blast to see what other, more experienced photogs are doing. I tried a bunch of brackets (since I had the tripod and all) to give HDR a go. I have processed a couple in CS5, but I really don't know what I'm doing. I really haven't had much time to sit down and do any serious processing (a 3 y/o and 7 wk/old make time a bit scarce), and honestly I'm not sure there really were any great keepers anyway. I did take one SP that my wife really liked. I may even get that uploaded and post it on the People forum at some point.

But anyway, it was a great experience. I was very tired afterward, but I can't wait to do it again sometime! When I've had a chance to go through my photos (assuming any turn out decently) I'll be glad to post some up.

Unfortunately I had prior commitments...so it seems there was no WWPW at all in Wichita....but there were some in other tiny burgs.....
Can't wait to see the pix from the various walks....................

I had a blast and found stuff to photograph I didn't know was in the area. Now that my biz trip is over I am working on selecting the keepers. I started with 470 images and now am down to 200, still have a way to go... the current ones I am considering are at http://photos.bradfordbenn.com/SOOC/Photowalk2010/ as I realized I can cull on the go from there.
