I have a friend who bought a Canon Rebel XS over a year ago, but has not used it much. She is an accomplished local photographer who is just now trying to make the digital transition, and this is her first digital camera of any kind. She has some difficulty following the manual, since much of the terminology is unfamiliar to her, and the whole idea of the menu system and navigating through it is a bit of a challenge to her (she is not a big computer user, and struggles with the electronics). With that said, can anyone recommend a good book that will clearly explain the basics of using the camera? If she had a Nikon, I would consider a Thom Hogan guide, so something similar for Canon might be a good choice.

Thanks

You might start with an on-line guide such as:

http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetProductArticlesAct&productID=210&articleTypeID=48

Add the "Operations and Controls" section of this review:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1000d/page7.asp

There is a Field Guide (that I have not seen):

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Rebel-1000D-Digital-Field/dp/0470409509

... and a "... for Dummies" version:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel-1000D-Dummies/dp/0470433922/ref=pd_sim_b_1

--------------------------------------------------

If your friend is used to manual mode on a film SLR, it's important to note that the Canon Rebel series digital cameras only have a single control dial. In Manual mode the control dial adjusts shutter speed, while holding the "Av/Exposure Compensation" button down toggles the dial function to adjust aperture. Have her practice that a few times and it will become second nature.

Of course the Canon xxD and xD cameras have 2 control dials and a professional shooter appreciates those extra controls in manual mode.

By all means, have your friend post any questions here and we will be able to help. A lot of us were once in her shoes and completely understand what she is going through.

I'm in the middle of reading David Busch's Guide for my camera and it's AWESOME. I've read Charlotte K Lowrie's Digital Field Guide and it's good, but my favorite by far is David Busch's. Here's a link to the Busch guide for the Canon XS:
