Ball head question

This may be an obvious question, but I have never owned a ball head. Are all ball heads greased? Are some worse/more than others? What kind of maintenance is involved?

The ball and its housing is metal but the ball is typically padded with some self lubricating delrin plastic so there is no direct metal to metal contact. In general you never have to lubricate them yourself.

This is the one I use, but there are lot's of good brands and sources for them.
