shay and i teamed up to put together a promo gallery of nyc shots, to show what can be done with the new maps feature on smugmug. it's very very cool!
we had to enter latitude and longitude information manually into the exif (can be done very easily thru the smugmug gallery interface, you can even use a lookup feature within smugmug to get the coordinates!). once the camera mfgrs integrate gps onboard, why then the info will be in the exif already :thumb
please have a look (http://www.moonriverphotography.com/gallery/734406)
if you have google earth installed on your computer, simply click on the google earth feed button on the bottom of the screen.. then open the feed file and google earth will automatically open and show you the mapped shots :D
if you don't have google earth, then click on the "map this" button on the upper right portion of the gallery screen - it will take you to the thin client version (served up by smugmug) of google maps and show you the photos that way.
either way....
enjoy (mapped) photography,

That's pretty cool. Is this what they were collecting pictures for? And if so where are they?

Care to share the method of achieving this.
This could be the start of something big in the travel industry??
How about soliciting for state pics?
Goggle Earth is a great tool i used it to help in finding a home in Reno.
Thanks for sharing

What is google earth? How do I get it? Would it be easiest to just "google" google earth?
Looks fantastic from what I can see.

first, you have to have photos that have lat/long info in the exif. you can add this info in the edit photo dropdown box, you'll see a new choice, edit geography.
enable maps in your customize gallery setup
the gallery must be *public* not private :nono
when you have maps enabled, you'll see the google maps feed button on the bottom of your screen (for the google earth feed) and a "map this" button on the upper right of your screen (for the maps.google.com interface).
voila!

Hey Andy,
You might wanna think about keywords in that gallery so people can easily pick areas of interest — uptown, downtown, tribeca...
Here's an example in the Rated and Located in Silicon Valley (http://cmac.smugmug.com/gallery/735592) gallery. We have it so keywords are available below each photo, so you can quickly see The New Hotness companies, the Old and Busted, Evil, etc.
Thanks,
Baldy
(erem... Onethumb did a special hack in that gallery so the markers are different colors depending on hotness.)

the geography function was the first thing i noticed after the refresh of the design... i quickly started trying to find the coordinates of all my mountain trip pictures- and especially the elevations! thanks for explaining how to turn it on the in gallery!
