Are you a Smugmug Pro who is part of the "if-i-only-had-the-time-to-learn-css-and-html-i-would-have-the-smugmug-site-of-my-dreams" crowd? Do you simply want a customized site but you couldn't care less about learning css and html (hey, you're a professional photographer not a web designer for pete's sake!). Well I may be able to be of some service to you.

In a previous discussion (here (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=16619&page=14&pp=10)), Baldy and JT made my head so big that I decided that people may be interested in having my help with their Smugmug customization. With the blessing of the Smugmug guys, under the condition that I make it clear that I am not affiliated with Smugmug in any way shape or form (other than being a Smugmug Pro subscriber myself), I have decided to offer my services.

Of course, like anything, you need to build up a reputation. I'll need a portfolio. So for the next few days I am taking submissions to customize your Smugmug site ... for free. This will include mostly your galleries and the overall look of your page until Smugmug gets to phase 3 of their customization plan - but trust me, that is a lot of stuff. It also includes a modest amount of graphics done by me for you (which you will host on your Smugmug site or in the case of png's somewhere else like imageshack).

Here's the catch, you provide all the content, it says what you want it to say and that's it. Also I work within the smugmug cobranding and that's it, meaning I'm not (yet) at a point that I want to mess around building a front page or an entry page or help pages or anything else hosted anywhere else. If things go well (who knows right?) then maybe I'll hop into that, but it's a whole other banana to peel so not yet. Think of it as me making your Smugmug site look how you want it.

And I need to give myself a bit of an out. If this is way more popular than I expect I may need to limit the number of free pages I do rather than the time frame in which I'll do them. I don't know what that number may be, but if it looks like I'm getting swamped (I have no clue if that'll happen or not) then I'll start charging for those who are still interested.

Dgrin user cjohn has already expressed intrest as has dgrin user landrum so they are 1 and 2 respectively. Anyone else who is interested can sign up here.

And if you're interested in what I've done thus far just go to http://www.mikelanephotography.com.

Mike

EDIT: I'm obviously going to have to pair this offer down a bit considering. We're up to 11 as of right now and it's only been a couple of hours. I'm worried 1) that I won't be able to get to everyone if I keep going too much longer and 2) that I won't have any time for anything else.

I'm thinking the initial round of questions will be via email (and only to a couple of people at a time - please be patient) but everyone needs to start thinking about a few things. What colors would you like? What fonts would you like? Are there any personal touches you would like? Navbar or no? Search or no? Keywords? Is there anything that you really don't want?

You don't have to know the answers to any of these questions, but the more info I have, the better I'll be able to build you a site that you love.

Please don't bother posting them on here, just think about what you want and wait for me to email you (oh and please provide your email address if you haven't yet).

I am fairly new here. I had another account and have been reading mostly since I opened my Smug Mug account three weeks ago. If not for the assisance Mike, but for a few examples. I am still trying to set up roll overs. I can find a comprehensive list of the way to change things. I need help to get rid of the new green lettering though. I was happy with the previous coloring. Thanks.

Putting .title {color:#ff0000} in your css changes all the green to red. Insert your favorite color hex value after the "#". Go to http://www.december.com/html/spec/color3.html to get a bit of help finding hex codes.

One thing I'll get around to doing is a bit of a help file that covers more than the smugmug help file (i.e. it'll cover rollovers and such), but that'll take a while considering... You can take a look at my site to see how I did it, also check out http://del.icio.us/popular/css and you will very likely find a bunch of links that point you in the direction of rollovers (and much, much more).

Hmmm, "css changes" -- where are they? I changed my header box via the Control Panel/Customize, but that was IT! I even centered it. (VERY basic!) But where does one change the green to another color for the whole site? :scratch

I'm obviously going to have to pair this offer down a bit considering. We're up to 11 as of right now and it's only been a couple of hours. I'm worried 1) that I won't be able to get to everyone if I keep going too much longer and 2) that I won't have any time for anything else.

To that end, I'm going to limit the free offer to the first 20 people that sign up (only 9 spots left!!!) and then I'm going to start charging (not too much just enough to make this worth it for me but as of yet TBD).

I am new to CSS, but as far as general cobranding goes, I've learned soooo much over the years.

Have a look at my smugmug and see if I know anything that you might want to learn and use; I'd be glad to help anyone. My latest trick is image mapping, where you take one image titlebar, created in photoshop with text etc. on it, and then "map" links onto the one, single image. I'm really really stoked about it all...

It's very hard to help someone when they just say "help me!", but if anyone has a specific question about a specific aspect that they'd like to learn, please do drop me an email and I'll try and help. Good luck!

I'd love to hear more about your image mapping. I checked out your site and it works very well.

Also, I would love to hear you (and others) pointers on changing colors (background, text, etc.). I have figured out how to do this, but it is rather painful having to use specific color codes etc. Any quicker easier way to do this?

Hex colors, ahhhhh... I used to spend hours upon hours trying to get the colors juuuuust right. My weblog has it's own color creator, but there are zillions of color hex # lists online. In fact I think MS paint can give you hex #'s, but MS programs are dying left and right on me so I can't check. But yeah, search google for "hex color chart" and you'll have more than you need.

As far as actually changing the colors on smugmug goes, I'm still trying to figure out the CSS stuff... To change the color of misc. texts around your website, you put:

.title {color: #379D49;}

...where that 6 digit number is the hex color. To change just the title, put:

#breadcrumb .title {color: #379D49;}

...and to change the color of the image borders, (in smugmug style only) you put:

.imgBorderOn {border: solid 2px #E2A525;}

.imgBorder {border: solid 1px #2CA984;}

...you just have to put in your own numbers and see which texts change color, it's hard to explain which each does...

Hope this helps,

-Matt-

Sometimes, just getting the process started by making a few simple changes would get the juices flowing so to speak. Sometimes it's just getting past that initial hurdle of the technospeak, etc. that makes it easier to keep going. If it turns out to be totally beyond me, I'd be happy to pay you. I think my biggest "want" is to get a nice banner, and then to be able to tweak the overall look of the pages. I LOVE Andy's black and white one (I think it was Andy's.)

I'll check out that control panel css box. Don't know how I missed that...

Just a suggestion.

I should be a bit more clear on this. My goal here is to do the cobranding for people who either don't feel they can or don't want to take the time to figure out how. At this point, I'm not really interested in being the cobranding or css professor. Eventually I may have my own little help file up that covers some advanced topics, but for now I'm here to make your site look how you want it. Maybe after I start charging I can be partly a cobranding consultant and I can lead you to your site rather than giving it to you. That's in the future though.

The free offer is only so I can get a bunch of sites to use as a portfolio. I will be linking to your site (or I'll use a screenshot or both) to say to people, "Look, I'm pretty good at this and I've done it a lot so how about using my services?" So really, I'm not much interested in just getting the ball rolling for you right now. There is WAY more than enough information on dgrin, the css helpfiles, and everywhere else on the web that you can research how to do this if you want to do it on your own (indeed that is how I learned).

If what I'm offering is something that you're certain you don't want, hop off the free list and let others have a chance. If, on the other hand, given my newer, clearer purpose statement you would like a whole new site just stick with it (no need for replies or emails).

Also - and I know I'm not a moderator and you can do what you want - could we maybe move instructional things to another topic (which I'm certain to join in on)? It's for no other reason than they are off topic here (and yes, I realize that I've been doing it as well).

Mike Lane
Aug-17-2005, 07:38 AM
Oh and incidentally, my cobranding is pretty much done although there may be some stragglers styles that I missed on some of the gallery pages (have a look!). So I'll be sending out emails to the first couple of people on the list today.

Also, CSS color attributes accept certain named colors as well. It's handy if someone out there wants to do some quick tests with some basic colors and doesn't want to hunt down the hex color code.

I don't have a list handy (sorry!) but I know that most "plain" color name will work, such as black, white, blue, red, green, yellow, grey, silver, light-blue, etc. Just put the color name in instead of the hex code (leave out the # too).

Of course if you want a very specific color, you'll need to use the hex code.

I particularly like the 'about me' link and use of a journal display mode to discuss your photography and services on Matthew's site. That is unique (maybe not for long!:wink ) and very elegant. The text and links along the bottom are also innovative and unobtrusive but still noticable. Lots to like on Matthew's site.

And Matthew - your photography is impressive as well.

Good News! I have just finished the 1st website on the free customization list! Check it out, http://www.pristine-light.com by Cedric M. Jones (dgrin user cjohn), I must say I like it better than my own site:D

There are a few touch up things I've yet to do on Pristine Light and then after that I'm moving on to landrum's site.

there's a double-text typo here on this page http://www.pristine-light.com/gallery/729875/

really nice job, mike. :clap :clap :clap the colors are *gorgeous*

Okay, so after I posted this I immediately went on vacation for a while, then I was approached by 2 different people who offered to pay me to customize their site right away, then I started this whole customization for dummies thing. All in all I've been a very busy chap.

mike/cedric: use this code (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=18754) to remove the words "gallery page 1 (of X) from the single-page galleries (like your "about me" gallery) - it cleans up the page really nice.

also, i'd suggest removing the slideshow button (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=17330&highlight=remove+slideshow) from those same 1-page galleries

hope this helps!

Mike,
You did an amazing job on that site. I love the header, the menu, and the color scheme. Excellent job.
I have just started perusing the source and it seems to be documented very well. Hopefully I can learn something from this. Especially more about how you did the menu.
Can you share what software you used to create the graphic (including text) for the menu?

Steve

Thanks! Everything was done using Photoshop CS2. You'll probably learn more from the article on A List Apart that I referenced in the comments of the CSS than from the CSS itself.

hey mike

do you think that since you did this work for cedric, that maybe you could talk him into a link to digital grin on his "links page?" he refers his viewers to other forums :rolleyes

also, cedric - if you're reading: lovely looking site - you should test *every* link on every page, some of them don't do what you want them to do.. and there are typos all around.. proofreading is key!

cheers and nice work

I'll be in your shoes sooner or later hopefully (the dad part). We're working on it. Well, not right this second, but ... well you know.

Anywho... send me an email (in my bio or on my page) and we'll get you in the (extensive) queue.

Oh and welcome to dgrin! Maybe we can arrange a northwest photo get together or something sometime...

Ouch, that does remind me of 17 or 18 "rough" wake up's. Most my spud activity resembled these however....

Mike:

Not sure if there's room (or time), but I'd be interested in your services. And if your free list is full, I'd be willing to pay.

To that end, I'm going to limit the free offer to the first 20 people that sign up (only 9 spots left!!!) and then I'm going to start charging (not too much just enough to make this worth it for me but as of yet TBD).

Hey Mike I emailed about a month ago for your services, but I know you are busy. I would love some help on my site, money or not, I just need some help
Thanks
