Is it possible to get configurable camera-gear inserts for an ordinary carry-on bag?
I have a laptop/carry-on wheelie bag which is actually perfect for camera gear. I usually pack my camera bag IN the suitcase, but it would be great if I could figure out a way to pad it up so that I could just pack gear straight into it. Anybody know of anything out there that isn't specifically sized for a proprietary bag?
Tx in advance!

Domke makes some fairly nice inserts that some folks have been able to make work in generic bags:

That got me looking. Also see this Tenba insert:

... and the Billingham series:

It's not quite what you asked for, but optech makes form fitting pouches in many sizes that fit cameras and provide some padding. I've been using one in my carry-on bag for a little while now. http://optechusa.com/product/detail/?PRODUCT_ID=32&PRODUCT_SUB_ID=&CATEGORY_ID=5 I use one for the camera, and use simple lens cases (Lowepro or the ones that come with lenses) individually for the lenses. I started looking for dividers this past summer, and couldn't find any that were quite what I wanted, but then I found the pouches and was happy with them.

Thanks guys. Zig, I'm not sure those would fit - I think they might be too deep for the bag, (although I probably should go and measure before assuming that .... :rolleyes )
I saw some a while back and now can't remember for the life of me who made them - it was a removable "grid" of dividers - probably about 5x8 sections. . If I can remember who made it and find the link, I"ll post.
ETA: FOUND IT!! It's cheaper than I remembered and only 3x5 (whoops), but this is it. If it fits, it might do very nicely!! http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/RM24473/

MG ....
I have a Pelican case that I fitted with this padding system (http://www.pelican-case.com/15padiseton.html). I think this site sells the padding system to fit various sized cases and you might find what you are looking for. I've used this case/padding system for multiple trips. On some of these trips, I've had to check the case at the gate - flying commuter planes is such a pain - with no issues.

In my hiking pack, I currently have a piece of high density foam (can't remember if it's 5" or 6" thick) that takes up the entire interior. In the foam, I cut individual slots for each piece of gear I wanted to transport when0 I hike, bike, etc.
It has worked out fantastically and I am very happy with the end result after being told by some folks it probably wouldn't work. It did take a little effort because the backpack I was working with had some contours to account for and cut in (unlike most carry on bags I've seen which might make it easier) but overall it went great. Each "slot" I cut in, I made a little snug, to hold my glass, camera and speedlight perfectly tightly with padding surrounding each piece.
This might be an option. :dunno

It's a little hard to tell from the photo, but are all the dividers velcro'd everywhere, so that you can reconfigure the dividers any way you want?
They also have a lid organizer, do you use one?

Yes, all dividers use Velcro™ to attach - thus the case is completely configurable.
I do not use the lid organizer. Instead, the inside lid of my case has some foam cushion - I just place flat stuff between the hard case lid and the foam.
