The rock is indeed "interesting" but I don't really get much out of the capture.

The colors are nice and warm, but the focus is a little soft. I don't know what I would do different though to capture it better. Perhaps someone else will have a good idea.

I have struggled with this type of shot before. There needs to be something
that draws you into the frame and holds you there for a bit. This one doesn't
do it for me.

The exposure is good as is the detail but the shot doesn't work for me.

Next time, I would look for a more engaging pattern in the rocks or perhaps
follow the line out to sea.

What frustrates my brain, and hence makes it hard to appreciate the picture, is the doubt if I am looking at a horizontal surface and looking straight down (which i think it is), or a vertical surface.

This shot would also benefit (opinion based) on some more dramatic lighting, or perhaps warm it with a warming filter.

Sam - I think this is an interesting shot. Looks like a close-up of Jaba the Hut :rofl

I'm sure it would benefit from more dramatic lighting but I don't know what you can do in post.

I keep picking out forms... I see two sets of "lips" and at least one "eye"

Thanks to all who posted. I just can't see things with your eyes. :):

It is actually a vertical rock surface at Bean Hollow on the California coast.

Oh yeah......back to the drawing board. :D

Sam for me it comes down to one question: what's the shot about? Is it the pattern? The texture? The light? As I look at your shot, I can't see what it's about, and so it kinda leaves me cold.

Sid,

Thanks for your honest opinion. I don't believe (most) photos need any explanation, ya ether likes it or ya don't. But I would rather have an honest it sucks, than some mumbling blathering no point prattle. :D

"kinda leaves me cold" My last girlfriend said the same thing. :dunno

Sam,
Don't go back to the drawing board just yet - as with Michelangelo's David - Michelangelo is quoted upon the completion of his work - "From each block of marble - a statue waiting to escape." I think you see it - some other posters see it - IMHO - I would work the area - zoom out or back away - shoot closer in stages - change angles - shoot a couple of hundred shots and see if it develops into something more than meets the eye (at first) - see what other clues are there are to help define what the rock holds. As far as the photo - technically speaking - nothing to talk about - don't doubt the continuing development of the "creative eye".
The beauty of photography is how "we" as individuals "see" via the lens - and when we make others believe what we "see" - it becomes art.

It lacks a clear subject. It does have an interesting texture. You might want to keep it to use as some type of double exposure or fill in PS on another shot later in life:):
