Here's my take.... I love those public message boards, very French! And I like the composition.

For me, a couple of things might make a more powerful image. The first is finding a message on the board that's ironic/interesting/humorous/eye catching. Making a message like that the focal point of your composition would give the eye something to grab onto on the message board.

The other thing is hard to pull off with your camera: shallow depth of field. Putting the background slightly out of focus would help the message board pop. And as ever, more dramatic/sympathetic lighting always improves a shot!

Just my take, often wrong, hope this helps!

I think you're right, it looks a little rough. Did you use gaussian blur or motion blur? It's definitely better to do it in camera, if you can, than do it in post.

I think you overdid the blur here a little, but you are on the right track. When I blur a background in PS, sometimes I find that decreasing the HUE and SATURATION a little bit is also helpful. Not to B&W, but just backed off 4-10%

I think Sid is right that the message board is not strong enough on its own to really carry the shot though. The 10D will allow you much more control of your depth of field - it is a great camera, i loved mine when I got it.
