Whenever I embed videos in my blog I have issues playing them.

I click on the large play button in the middle of the video, a progress bar appears from the bottom, the video plays for 1 second, the progress bar still shows a pause button, and the video stops playing.

I have to click on the pause button for the video to start up again, and the progress bar usually never goes away until the video is well into its playback

My expectations when viewing the embedded video.
I click on the play button it plays, hover over the video and get the progress bar, move mouse back off, the progress bar goes away....the video never stops playing unless I hit pause.

why is the embedded video so weird?

Hi, sorry to hear that's happening! The embedded videos are Flash so the first thing to check would be to make sure you have the current version of Flash installed. Here's where you can download that:

http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer

I would probably also recommend that you restart your computer after installing it as well.

Please let us know if that doesn't fix this for you.

I just clicked on your video on your blog where the boys were trying out the berm, and it played fine for me (latest version of FireFox and Flash on a Win-7 64-bit system).

I seem to recall a post a while back about the embedded player settings. I was having a problem, and it turned out that I was linking to an older version of the ShizVidz.swf file. There's a date code on the file, and it looks like you're using a version from January 22. If you're still having problems, it might be worthwhile to see if there's a later version of it--that's what fixed my problem :)

I have the same issue with the same behavior as mtnbiker. Here is what my testing has found:

Clicking the center play button of embedded smugmug video will fail (stop after 1 second) on a majority of the test runs I have run. Clicking on the play button on the lower left hand side will result in no failures.

Platform used to test:

Win7 64bit, 10 test runs each - Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.6.3, Chrome 4.1.249.1064 (45376), Opera 10.53, Flash Version 10.0.45.2

Internet Explorer (Center Play Button) - Fail 10 of 10
Internet Explorer (Lower Left Play Button) - Fail 0 of 10

Firefox (Center Play Button) - Fail 10 of 10
Firefox (Lower Left Play Button) - Fail 0 of 10

Chrome (Center Play Button) - Fail 9 of 10
Chrome (Lower Left Play Button) - Fail 0 of 10

Opera (Center Play Button) - Fail 4 of 10
Opera (Lower Left Play Button) - Fail 0 of 10

for 5 test runs browser was refreshed each time for the other 5 test runs browser was closed and re-opened each time.

I think there may be an issue with the center play button based upon what I am seeing.

When you are clicking play, how far has the video cached? You can see the loading indicator under the play head. The video should autostart when it has cached enough to play. Forcing it to play can often cause the playhead to catch up the cache causing playback to stop until the video loads more cache.

Screen cast showing the problem - http://Whisler.smugmug.com/gallery/12075697_UdHrH#857783728_uWFtY-A-LB

I grabbed the embed code from the share link within Smugmug which does not seem to auto start (preferred) I could wait 5 hours or 5 days and this video would never auto start. The video is fully cached when playing as you should be able to see on the video above. I am working on a 50mbps connection @ home so it does not take any time to load/cache any size video loaded via smugmug. I hope the small screen cast above will allow us to move past proving the issue/ruling out user error. Thanks for the response and your help!!

now the playback overlay won't disappear, covering the lower 1/4 of the video, unless I grab the time indicator and move it back or forth...then it won't come back again.

What should happen is the overlay should drop down, and on mouse over should come back up, then disappear on mouse out.
Please get this fixed.

docwalker, anyone @ Smugmug any update on this? It looks like you have at least 2 pro users with the same issue when embedding video. Thanks for your help!

Smugmug should I email this into the support email? It has been crickets for over 10 days. Let me know I would be happy to send it in. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay. Can you folks give me some details that I can use to replicate what is happening? I know that overpolished has sent some of the info but more data points would help.

1. A link to where the video is embedded and you are seeing it happen.
2. What browser and OS you see this in.
3. Have you tried other browsers to see if you get the same results.
4. A link to the video that the embed is from.
5. What flash version are you running? Have you updated?
6. Do you have other flash elements on the page where it is embedded?

I need these details as I look at a lot of videos throughout the week and have not seen this behavior. I need to figure out how to replicate it to see what is happening. Any help you can provide would make this easier.
