what if we also used whipping post (or set up yet another Forum) to allow less proficient photographers (non experts) such as mois, to post with the goal of reaching a given milestone (e.g. 5 or 10 individual photos that are given the minimum thumbs up (criteria to be determined) votes (# to be determined) by the 3 or 5 or 7 appointed judges/experts (# to be determined)

once this milestone is achieved by the Dgrin member (may take 3 months/ maybe 3 years and maybe never!! -no gaurantees) is given the DGRIN thumbs- up/vote of confidence, to upgrade from their low end SLR or DSLR, to something bigger and better... the idea would be that why bother upgrade to more camera (for us DGRIN non-experts) before the technical skills are present, to take advantage of the MORE camera and lens!

In other words, a goal based Forum that the individual could sign on for (by choice of course) and once the participant achieves the x number of thumbs-up by x experts...they (dun did gradiate) and can go ahead with confidence and upgrade (if they choose so)

...an ongoing fun (yet serious challenge), that DGRIN members could participate in and celebrate fellow members milestones!

Perhaps we could even acknowledge the graduates with a nickname/title...something for new members to also aspire to overtime...

* may also help to create further stickiness for the DGRIN community!

might be fun...!

more work needed on final draft....

what do you think? :puke1 or :thumb

I dunno, sounds like a complicated way to get feedback! :dunno

I'd say keep posting and asking for feedback. When a shot is "whipped' go take the same shot again and improve on it (if the subject merits that much attention.) Over and over, if necessary.

Learn to develop a critical eye, so that you recognize a good shot and are better able to analyze your own.

That's a lot easier and more productive than having a bunch of strangers score your photos.

Sid's spot on, you have to learn to self critique, (hopefully when your looking through the viewfinder) to move on!

Hi Anson,
Only you can decide when you have enough confidence to like your own pictures. You need to remember that all critiques are opinions from those writing them. I give a critique and it's based on my experiences and biases. You may not agree with them so does that make my critique bad, or your photo bad by my critique...No. Are you going to base what is good or bad from someone else?

The idea of the critiques is to allow yourself to see a photo through someone else's eyes. To see what they see based on their likes and dislikes. Having a rating system won't get you there. Do some critiquing on the whipping post, it's very educational. Noone should give you any grief about expressing your views.

We also have a "goal based Forum" and it's called challenges. Within that forum, you can post a possibles and get some feedback, make changes and post again. These are based around a theme/goal.

So, on this note, I have to agree with Sid and Gubbs. Do a self critique, then post and see if it agrees with others. If you like the picture the way it is, then there is no need for a critique as it's already good:D. Don't let someone else pop your bubble on a photo you like because your photos are all about you. I'll step down now:soapbox.

Looking forward to more of your posts,
Chris

Anson,
I'm in that long line with Chris, Sid and Gubbs. Posters here give loads of feedback. You don't have to use the WP to get input. You can ask for input in any of the regular forums too. As mentioned, just let people know that you'd like them to slice and dice your shot :rofl and you'll probably get more criticism than you ever wanted....LOL

I'm not so sure about Chris' "having enough confidence to like your own pictures" comment :dunno Hopefully, that's not a rule....lol

Anywho, keep shooting and keep posting pics and you will improve :thumb

Steve Hi Steve,
After reading this, I went back and reread that first sentence. Wow, I was thinking somewhere in left field and it took me awhile before I realized what I was trying to say. I see the LOL so I assume you got the jist, but there is plenty of room for confusion here.

is given the DGRIN thumbs- up/vote of confidence, to upgrade from their low end SLR or DSLR, to something bigger and better.
The above phrase is what I was referring to for that sentence:D.

Hope this clarifies for anyone else,
Chris

And Steve, if it was a rule, this place would be a virtual ghost town:snore.
