I mean, REALLY ADVANCED. Check this out. Adaptive optics for telescopes have been around for years, but this technique is software only, and applied to blurred images. The software makes a change, compares it to the original and see if it thinks it's better or worse, and then makes another incremental guess. They can get results like this. If you have "MatLab" software, you can try the sharpening algorithms from here:

They had planned on adding this to a firmware update... however, when they realized it took the camera 1.5 days to process one image, they pulled the feature.


Pretty amazing stuff. We'll probably see some of this work make it's way down to the average photographer. It'll probably show up in some sharpening only software, then in a Photoshop plug-in and maybe someday some of the techniques will wind up in camera... It'll probalby be a while though.
